________________
It is beyond doubt that he is the author of all the above-mentioned works except the Dhyānaśataka. The description of all these works and also of the commentaries on them is given in my introduction to the Gañadharavada. Hence it would be proper for me if I write here in detail about the Viseşāyası akabhāsya only. First I shall give an idea of the commentarial literature on the Viseşāvasya kabbāşya and then I shall describe the subject-matter of the Viseşāvašyakabhāṣy a proper.
Commentarial Literature on the Višeşāvaśyakabhāsya :
The auto-commentary on the Viseşāvašyakabhasya is included in this volume. It is upto gātha No 2318. Ac. Jipabhadra left it incomplete due to his death. Ac, Kottārya completed it. This supplement to the auto-commentary is also printed here. There are other two commentaries one by Kotyācārya and the other by Ac. Maladhari Hemacandra, Both these commentaries have been published."
belonginaties there occur. later than 9th
We know nothing about Kottārya and Kotyācārya. But they cannot be assigned to the period later than 9th Cent. V. S. because in their commentaries there occur no quotation from the works of the Acaryas belonging to the later centuries. References to the Nyāyasūtra (ga. 2351) Vārşaganya (gā. 2351 ), Pramāņa-Samaccaya ( 2351 ), the Praśamarati (gā. 2447, 2462), the Yogadrstisamuccaya (gā. 2447), the Tattvārtha (gā, 2560), the Vaiseşikasūtra (gā. 2663), Mathara and Kauņdinya (gā. 2667), the Avaśyakacūrņi, (3601) etc. are found in the commentary by Kottārya. Hence it seems that it is later than the Avaśyakacūrņi and Ac. Hribhadra too. In both these commentaries there are many places wbere one can mark the similarity. This similarity might be the result of their belonging to the same period of time. Again, in the commentary by Kotyācārya we find no reference to Ac. Haribhadra. This might suggest that Kotyācārya flourished earlier than Āc. Kottarya. It seems even more probable that Ac. Haribhajra, Kottārya and Kotyācārya-all the three were contemporary. One is struck by the similarity found in the two names Kottärya and Kotyācārya. Hence we should ponder over the question as to whether these two names refer to two different persons or one identical person.
The date of Ac. Maladbar Hem acandra is fixed. I have given the details of his life in my introduction to the Ganadbaravāda.aHence I shall not discuss here the problem of his life, date and works. He flourished in the reign of Siddharāja, the king of Gujarat, who attended his religious sermons and paid respect to him. Meny works bave been written by him. He is prior to that Ac. Hem acaudra who earned the 23. Refer to the Preface, Part I of this Volume, p. 4. 24, Introduction to the Ganadharavāda, pp. 45-52
