________________ 6 According to the tradition he lived for 104 years. Hence it can generally be said that he was alive during (the period of) c. 505-609. This does not come in conflict with the references occurring his work. in According to the Mathurakalpa (p. 19) contained in the Vividhatirthakalpa Ac. Jinabhadra Kumairamana restored the lost part of the Mahabi thasutra. For this le meditated upon a god in the Stupa constructed by gods in Mathura. This suggests his visit and stay in Mathura and corroborates the fact that he earned the title Ksamairamapa. The inscription on the two idols found from Ankoṭṭaka (modern Akota) informs us that he was a vacanācārya and belonged to Nirvṛta kula. 21 The terms vācanācārya, vācaka and Kṣa näśramana are synonymous. This proves that he toured in the region about Baroda and there he was recognised as an important figure. Thus we can conclude that the region of his tour was from Mathura in Northern India to Valabhi in Western India Ac. Siddhasena has written some lines in praise of Ac. Jinabhadra in the beginning of his commentary on Ac. Jinabhadra's Jtakalpabhäsya." The gist of this praise is as follows: Even the chief śrutadharas of his own time respected him. He possessed knowledge not only of the Śruta but also of other sastras. He was a supporter of the view that jñāna and darśana operate in succession. Many monks attended him in order to learn from him. He was well versed in various sciences, viz. systems of Indian philosophy, Mathematics, Prosody, Grammar. Palaeography, etc. He had deep knowledge of the fundamental works of other religions. He was very particular in practising the vows laid down in the Jaina Religion. He was foremost among all the Jaina monks of his time. Works of Ae, Jinabhadra: It is believed that the following works are from the pen of Ac. Jinabhadra. (1) Brhatsangrahant (Präkyta verses) (5) -Bhagya (Prakrta verse) (2) Brbatkşetrasama (" ") (6) Dhyanaśataka (" ") (" ") (7) Višeṣāvaśyakabhāṣya (' ") ") (8) "-Vrtti (" ") (3) Viseṣaṇavati (4) Jitakalpasütra 21.
