________________ 56 THE SYSTEMS OF INDIAN PHILOSOPHY spiritual aim is concerned, and certainly that is the aim of all philosophies, the exercise of these powers is a positive obstacle on the way to Hatra. This is clearly stated in the Yoga Sutras. But in the yoga aphorisms published by Mr. Judge of New York this portion is mistranslated (See Judge's Yoga Sutras). 34. The breath in the body is divided into five classes. The air intercepted between the tip of the nose and heart is called stot, that between the heart and the navel is called 6711, that from the navel to the toes of the feet is called 37417, that above the tip of nose is called SGT and that which pervades the whole body is called 0247. Their respective functions are vitalizing, digestion, expulsion of the excrements, raising up the sound etc. and motion in general. The 36ta air has the tendency to raise the body upward and carry it above water etc. Hence by mastery over SGF there arises the power of ascension, non-contact with water, mud, thorn etc.70 With reference to the HT breath, the part about the navel is its seat where it performs the function of digestion by keeping the internal fire. When is performed on AHF, this fire can be seen about the whole body which will on that account appear effulgent.71 This effulgence is most perceptible about the head, between the eye-brows and at the navel. It is said to be the basis of the magnetic currents of the living beings 35. By #4H on the relation between ether which is the substratum of sound-vibrations and the sense of hearing arises the power of clair-audience.72 By $144 on the relation between the body and the 371971 (ether) 70.
