THE SYSTEMS OF INDIAN PHILOSOPHY
is the absence of light, a seventh category called 37219 or non-existence or negation of existence is added to the six mentioned before. 6. We will now proceed with these categories one by one.
(i) The first is gou or substance. Kanada divides them into nine classes, quafi (earth), 6C) (water), ata (light), ary (air), 37047T (ether), files (time), fapte (space), 3HHT (soul), HAREL (mind). These are the nine substances, each existing as an entity. There is no substance, material or spiritual, outside these nine.
(ii) The second category is ju or quality. According to this philosophy there are only 24 qualities and no more. These are 59 (colour), 8 (savour or taste), (Auidity), E (viscidity), HFPT (self-productiveness), af (merit), 3788 (demerit), and 7 (sound).
(iii) The third category action is fivefold : Sequr (elevation or throwing upwards), 3798901 (depression or throwing downwards), आकुंचन (contraction), संप्रसारण (dilatation), and that (motion in general). (iv) The fourth category is 8147-2T (generality). It is twofold, higher and lower. All the different objects though different one from each other are known as substance. Their being substance is the highest generalization.5
5. Really speaking, the highest generality is Hair and it
belongs to the substances, qualities and actions-inasmuch as these substances etc. though different from each other can all be called सत्.
