It is so called because in this puja or worship, eight materials are used. viz. (1) water (jala ) for Bathing the idol (2) Sandal ointment (chandana, ) (3) flowers (kusuma), (4) incense (dhupo ), (5) lamp (dipa), (6) rice with unbroken ( akshata ) ends, (7) offering of sweets, and other things generally eight in number ( which are presented before an idol and which are technically known as naivedya'), (8) fruits ( fala).
