________________ 4. In the reign of Siddharaja, Ac. Hemacandra composed a work on grammar called, after his and his patron's name, Siddha-Hemacandravyākaraṇa3. It has been published along with Laghu-vrtti, Brhad-vrtti, Laghu-nyasa and Brhan-nyāsa. 3 5. The fifth one is the present work of Ac. Malayagiri. Some minor works on grammar following the tradition of the SiddhaHema-vyakarana were written in the 17th Cent of V. E. MALAYAGIRI: HIS LIFE, DATE & WORKS Up. Vinayavijayaji (17th Cent. of Christian Era) includes the name of Ac. Malayagiri in his list of yugapradhanas. But no information regarding his life is available in the prabandhas like Prabhavakacarita, Puratanaprabandha, etc. Only in the Kumarapala-prabandha Jinamanḍanagani (15th Cent. of V. E.) it is said that Ac. Hemacandra, in company of Devendra Süri and Malayagiri, left for Gaudadeśa and went to Khilluragrāma. But this seems to be more of a myth than a fact. The only note-worthy thing in it is the mention of the name of Malayagiri. In the absence of other means, we should turn to his works themselves for discovering facts relating to his life. The two illustrations given by Ac. Hemacandra to explain the aphorism (Siddha-Hema, V. 2. 28) corroborate the historical fact of the contemporaneity of Ac. Hemacandra and Siddharāja. Similarly, an illustration given by Ac. Malayagiri, viz. adahat arätin Kumārapālaḥ' (Krdanta, 3. 23.) points to the historical fact that he was a contemporary of Kumarapala. To be more exact about the date of Ac. Malayagiri, it is, therefore, necessary to know as to when Kumārapāla was crowned and also as to when he conquered his enemies. The words put in the mouth of Lord Mahavira by Ac. Hemacandra make it sufficiently clear that Kumarapala came to throne in Vira Samvat 1669 (i. e. 1199 V. S. ). All the writers of prabandhas support this piece of information. It is but that purpose I collected the necessary material, viz. the oldest available ms, the other comparatively modern mss and a photocopy of the work. But as I proceeded with the work of correcting the text I found that all the mss are throughout corrupt and realised that it would take nearly ten years to correct the whole text. So with a heavy heart I took leave of the task. But if the Institute wants me to edit this work and allows me sufficient time, I am ready to carry out even this difficult task. For the details of this work one may refer to the pamphlet bearing the title ⚫ Gujarātnu Pradhana Vyakarana' published by Gujarāti Sahitya Parişat, Bombay. Bhavalokaprakāśa, 29. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
