King named Samantpal ruled in such lovely and great Champnagari. Samantpal, the best among men, was just, philosopher and a religious king. He was devoted to the Shramanas (Jain Sadhus). People of every caste, creed and profession lived in Champanagari. It was however a city of wealthy merchants. These wealthy merchants possessed wealth like that of Kuber. Amonget these merchants there lived a merchant named Vrudhdhdatt. Vrudhdhdatt owned a palace, a gaushala, carts, carriages and a shopping centre. In addition to these, he owned ninety-six crores of gold mohurs in cash. Sheth Vrudhdhdatt's younger brother was named Sadhudatt. Befitting his name, Sadhudatt was a man of good nature.
