________________ 16 SUBDIVISIONS OF STATUS (GOTRA) DETERMINING KARMA AND OBSTRUCTIVE (ANTARAYA) KARMA Two Sub-divisions of Status-determining Karma The name of this class is Gotra karma, there are only two subdivisions, namely: 1. Ucca Gotra karma, which brings the living being into high family surroundings. 2. Nīca Gotra karma, by reason of which the living being is born into low family and social circumstances. Difference between Mohaniya and Antaraya Karina The name is antaraya karma. Literally obstacle' karma. This karma acts as an obstacle to that which you desire to do. In the mohaniya [class 4] the inability to act rightly is owing to moral depravity and consequent non-perception of what is right; whereas in the antaraya karma the right action is seen, but is not done. Five Kinds of Antaraya Karma There are five kinds of this antaraya karma, namely: 1. Dānāntarāya karma; 'dāna' means to give. By reason of this karma the person is obstructed or prevented from giving; although it is the right time and place, and he has the means, still he does not give. 2. Lābhāntarāya karma; 'lābha' means gain. This karma is that which is an obstacle to gain or profit.
