આપના તા. ૧૫-૭–૩૭ ના પત્રના જવાબમાં હું જણાવવાની રજા લઉં છું કે મથુરાના સિહશિલાલેખ સંબંધી આપનો મત ખરો છે. આ શિલાલેખમાં નહપાન સંબંધી કાંઈ ઉલ્લેખ નથી. આ સિંહધ્વજ સ્થાપન કરવામાં આવ્યું ત્યાર પછી એકસો કરતાં પણ વધારે વર્ષો પછી નહપાન થયો હતો. આ શિલાલેખને જેનો સાથે કોઈ સંબંધ હોય એવું બતાવવાને તેમાં કાંઈ પણ નથી.

I am sorry I have not been able to reply to your letter. But I had been looking up. The trouble is that the books required for references are not at hand. My own books are in Lahore. As far as I remember, the name of Nahapāna does not figure in the inscription of the Lion Capital from Mathura, and the inscription is not Jain. But I shall study it again when I get a copy of it anywhere and then let you know. My idea is that the author' whom you have in view does not care much for accuracy and we should not attach much importance to what he opines.
It is no troubling me at all. I have to look to such matters. In case you have got with you any edition of that inscription you may kindly send it to me for a while and I shall return it with my reply.
