The subject of Kavyasiksas . . The science of poetics evolved in ancient India since long. It dealt with the definition of poetry, its basic grounds, its classification etc. Emphasis on the different characteristics of poetry gave rise to different schools of Indian poetics, such as the Rasa school, the Alankara school, the Riti school, the Vakrokti school and the Dhvani school. Several scholars contributed to the evolution of these schools; and most of the later scholars like Mammata tried to co-ordinate the different theories.
