________________ the truth AN EPITOME OF JAINISM So long these four elements exist in this particular combination, the jar is said to exist there as such We may arrive at the same conclusion in another way We know that there is a Am revenit distinction between the moumenal and phenomenal aspects of a thing Phenomenal aspect is that in which a thing presents itself to us or as it appears to us Clearly then it follows that we are conscious of an object only as it appears to us. But a deeper reflection reveal to us that what we know of the thing is only knowledge of its powers and properties. What is an orange to us except a peculiar combination of different qualities viz size, shape, colour, taste etc These pecular qualities in such particular combination as is found in an orange constitute what we call the knowledge of it. Of course it may be objected that these qualities cannot exist by themselves and so i equire a ground for their inference, so that these qualities themselves cannot make up the orange itself But we are far from denying this as we hold the view that all that we know of the thing is merely its 120
