________________ Every effect requires a Determining c2use. AN EPITOME OF JAINISM, that the manufacturer, the wheel, the lever are also but causes which combine in the production of the jar. It is thus clear that every-product or effect requires also a Determining cause (in addition to the Substantial one) to bring the same into actual existence. We have stated already that the primary ingredients--each and every one of these--are surcharged with infinite powers of their own having the potentiality of being developed in innumerable ways and these being but materials giving constitution and structure to all earthly existences are worked upon by the Determining cause to bring the same into varieties of combinations. And therefore it is due to the intervention of this Determining cause that we find the difference in the arrangements of atoms constituting the structure of the two molecules of Ammonium of cyanate and of Urea and it is this that accounts as well for other various differences in things in all the three worlds, chemical, physical and biological. But would not the ascription of Causality to the substance which is worked upon ¡nvolve the difficulty 222
