________________ logic THE NYAYA PHILOSOPHY, which is the highest object of the Yoga system. THE NYAYA PHILOSOPHY. Nyaya has always been translated by 'logic', and there are important considerations 'NyAya' is which partially justify such an interpretation not merely of the system. For, here, in the Nyaya system, a greater amount of space has been allowed to logical questions than in any of the other systems of Indian Philosophy, and, the theory of inference (anuman) is, undoub. tedly the predominant feature of the system Nevertheless, we must not imagine that Nyaya Sutras are mere treatises on Formal Logic. Logic is not the sole nor even the other relation chief aim of Gotama's Philosophy. Its chief end like that of all other Indian systems, is the attainment of liberation or as the Nyaya calls it, Nihshreyasa, the non plus ultra of blessedness. This liberation which the Nyaya Philosophy promises to all, is not a state of pure unmixed pleasure, as the Vedantin affirms, but a state of pleasure which supposes pain as its pre-condition.
