________________ Dr. Dulichand Jain : Karuna and the Significance ofits Social Implementation The need to spread the Karuņā mission is becoming more and more urgent because the social definition for success today is instant material rewards and a flamboyant lifestyle based on high levels of consumption and self-gratification. In such an ambience, it is very easy for youngsters to lose sight of what they are trampling upon while racing towards their goals. It is important to make them realize that they cannot inflict pain or sufering on other life forms for their own pleasure. Such as attitude may bring them success, but only shortlived. Karuņā Club-Programmes And Activities : The Karuņā club in each school is launched with an impressive inaugural function, followed by a solemn pledge taken by the students to eschew violence and embrace compassion. These clubs receive guidance and support, as well as periodic review and assessment, by Karuņā International. Each club must conduct at least six programmes annually, including meetings, competitions exhibitions, publications, ecoclubs and guest lectures. (Ref. No. 4). At these programmes, the activities must be aimed at building awareness of Karuņā ideals such as kindness towards animals, protection of the environment and vegetarianism. The clubs are also required to organize a minimum of 10 activities such as visits to animal shelters, animal feeding, environmental maintenance, interaction with the elderly presons at old age homes and similar events. Based on the activity reports sent by the clubs, Karuņā International confers awards during its annual conference. Karuņā clubs assist in building organizing skills, leadership and Karuņā values. The unique feature of the system is that, being entirely activity oriented, students need to reflect on Karuņā ideologies, understand them and create activities around them. This curriculum not only stmulates initiative but also generates conviction among the students regarding the need for compassion and non-violence and thus enables them to spread the message effectively.
