________________ shadows in savikalpaka jnana. But Sri Manatunga who wants to transcend the falsity in knowledge considers prathamam and jinendram pervasive and general. Whoever he may be, however great he may be, he be a god, saint or a godman, if he has not conquerred love and hatred and passions he can be a dravya-jinendra only. Bhava jinendra is one who has conquerred passions, love and hatred he be Rsabhadeva or Mahavira or anyone alse Bramha, Vishnu or Mahesa. The Sakrastava section of The Namutthunam Sutra offering salutations to the Jinendras of past, present and future indicates this aspect only. Not only did Sri Manatunga praised the innumerable jinas of yore and the innumerable jinas that would appear henceforth but also jinas like Simandhara Svami of present age too. That jina, who is important, is being praised. We have already stated that prathamam nay mean first and ancient. The intention of Sri Manatunga Suri is to state that He is the most important and the best among men Sri Manatunga had gone very deep when he analysed the prathama as transcending time and discussion. We too must have such feelings only. Such stotras are possible for Lords of gods only. Indras have done it. We do not have the collection of the stotras composed by Indras except one stotra viz., "The Sakra Stava" which had come down to us. "The Sakra Stava" is a psalm composed by Sakra i.e. Indra, Lord of Gods. It is also called The Namuthunam Sutra. 5. CITTA-HARAIR-UDARAIH Sri Manatunga had such a stotra as his model. They were cittahara (attractive) manohara (alluring) udara (great, generous since they reveal generous qualities) and bhavya. Hence Sri Manatunga referred to his work as cittahara and udara. So also the word "suralokanathaih" covers not only gods and Indras but great scholars too, rather the leaders who shine at the head of the scholarly groups. Had he used the word devalokanatha it would have precluded the scholars from being comprehended. Hence in order to refer both types of leaders he had used the word suralokanatha. As Indra the Lord of Devas praised the Lord, so the Lords of scholars too praise Him. These ideas have been brought out in indirect and direct ways. Every word of every sloka is charming and alluring and the meaning generous. What is the art of poetry ? Not mere versification. But making the beautiful ideas come to mind by such charming use of alluring words. The meanings of the words "mani and ratna" are well known. But the word mani is more attractive than ratna. Hence if the meaning must be majestic it must be conveyed through beautiful and alluring words. The greatness of Sri Manatunga is to convey generous meanings through charming words. Both "cittahara and cittakarsaka, are Sanskrit words meaning attractive but the word cittahara immediately recalls manohara to the mind than cittakarsaka. A word is beautiful if it comes naturally and understood so without causing any confusion or an iota of doubt. Though Bhaktamara is verily a mine for researchers, yet it is attractive enough to ordinary people too for the choicest use of words. These are to be felt and experienced by people with atleast a little knowledge of Sanskrit. Hence not developed further here. Such work is not a poetic art alone but art of and for life too. Art is not just there for the sake of art but for the sake of society. Many people want to make sweet speeches but their choice and collocations of words simply kill their desires. People generally entertain a feeling that no one pays heed to their words though they convey good ideas. For whom do you think is the dictionary intended ? i.e., people should try to improve their speeches. Though what is spoken of may be true it must also be said in a nice and pleasing way. An unwanted idea too can be made acceptable by pleasing words and the way in which they are used. But harsh and wrong use of words hurts the feelings and sentiments of people and it becomes counter-productive. A Gujarati proverb says, "He who does not know to speak spoils the case". Without a vocabulary of pleasing words at one's command one may definitely spoil one's case. This is presented by the story of two astrologers.
