A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE SIDDHANTA 1. Amgas.
1. Ayáramgam (Skt. alanga)as its name implies deals with the rules of conduct of a bhikkhu. It is divided into two Suyakkhandhas or volumes as we should say which greatly differ from each other in style. The first is far more important of the two. It is partly in verse and partly in prose. The second Suyakkhandha arranges the rules in a more orderly way. This difference in style is probably due to a difference in authors. The oldest commentary on the work is that by Sílánkácáry a who flourished in the ninth century A. D.
2. Súyagaḍamgam (Skt..) expounds in two Suyakkhandhas the doctrines of Jainism and of the heterodox systems. The first Syukkhandha is entirely in verse and the second with the exception of a single chapter, in prose. The first and the second Amgas are the most difficult works of the whole Siddhánta. Several passages in them are not clear even with the help of the commentaries. The lodest commentary is the one by Sílánkácárya. An
