________________ INTRODUCTION . 3 * The nokaşāya-kārmas are subdivided into nine classes, but we can igaore that subdivision. Now the gradation of gunasthānas is determined by the sway of the darśanamohaniya and kaşāya types of mohantya-karmas. In this connection the kaşāyas are divided into four types enumerated below in such an order that an earlier mentioned type is stronger than a latet mentioned one : (i) Anantanubandhin (those responsible for an extreme involvement in the worldly life) (ii) Apratyakhyanāvarana (those responsible for a total impossibility of · disciplined life ) (iii) Pratyakhyānāvarana (those responsible for a partial impossibility of disciplined life) (iv) Sañjvalana(those responsible for an occasionaleruption of emotions) Again it is held that a mohaniyakarma might assert itsself in four formis enumerated below in such an order that an earlier mentioned form is stronger than a later mentioned one (the fourth form being in fact a state of total elimination of the mohaniya-karma concerned): (i) Udaya (the state of full activization ) (ii) Kșayopasama (the state of elimination-cum-subsidence) (iii) Upasama (the state of subsidence) (iv) Kșaya ( the state of elimination ) Thus we get the following situation so far as the prevalence of the darśanamohanīya and kaşāyas in different gunusthänas is concerned. Ganasthāna Kasāya Darśanamohaniya Udaya Udaya of all the types ..I II-III IV Either kşayo pasama or upasama or kşaya V ditto Either kşayopaśama or upaśama or kşaya of the anantānubandhin type ; udaya of the rest. Either kşayo pašama or upašama or kşaya of the anantānubandhin type, kşayopasama of the apratyakhyānāva. raņa type; udaya of the rest.
