text (p. 350, line 3); afterwards we found that old manuscripts contain the reading ajjhatthie; F syllable written in old manuscripts looks very simllar to aH; hence in Appendix VIII we have corrected it in the foot-note (p. 754).
The letters '', etc. suggestive of numbers are presented here with explanation. They are presented here almost in the same form in which they are found in the manuscripts in order to preserve the notable feature of the old script as also to acquaint us with that feature. As for example, on p. 108, lines 13-14 the letter
[54] occurs while on p. 109, lines 19-20 the lettere (4) occurs. In the old script the letters etc. were employed in place of number 4.
In this critical edition of the two works, we have quoted in foot-notes many readings from the commentaries of Abhayadevasūri (=erto) in order to determine correct readings, to correct corrupt readings and to show variants. At places these quoted readings differ from those available in the printed texts. This is so because only after having corrected the readings available in the printed texts according to the very old manuscripts belonging to various manuscript libraries like Jesalmer Bhaņdāra we have quoted them in foot-notes. If one bears this fact in mind, one will not get confused on noticing the difference.
In the body of the text as also in foot-notes, the corrected or amended forms of readings are given in round brackets; see p. 447, line 13. Words and phrases which are deemed necessary but not available are put in square brackets.
Suddhi-Vrddhipatraka : Though we have read proofs with great care and concentration, many readings have been wrongly printed in this edition. Of them, those that came to my notice are corrected in the Suddhipatraka. Moreover, readings that flashed in our mind as correct ones after the printing of the text, are also shown here. And readings that we collected afterwards from the manuscripts like Elo are recorded in the Vrddhipatraka. So, we request the readers to read the text after having corrected it according to the suddhipatraka and the Vğddhipatraka. Again, we request them to correct those wrongly printed readings that have escaped our notice.
Appendices : The present critical edition of the Sthānangasūtra and the Samavāyāngasūtra is embellished with eight useful appendices. Some appendices contain indexes of special words, etc. As the Sthånăngasūtra and the Samavāyāngasūtra have the
