There the Doctor showed him his books, including an old volume, which he described as a family heirloom. Upon opening this book R-- was greatly surprised to see some of the mysterious words which had been communicated to him by the Frenchman seven years previously. Being naturally interested in this discovery he ventured to ask his host if he would be willing to sell the book, and if so what value he set upon it. "I have no use for it,” said the Doctor; "take it if you want it.” R- gratefully accepted the gift, and on taking the volume home found that it cast a flood of light on the studies to which he had been introduced on his initiation by the Frenchman. After eighteen years of assiduous study R- found himself possessed of knowledge of the greatest value to him. As an accepted member of the order of the Magi he was enabled to recover the use of the symbols and articles familiar to the Priests of Isis in the time of the Pharoahs.
