I recall the sound though cynical advice of a man of experience : “Never run after a bus or a woman ; there'll be another one along presently." During the last fifty years the toll of haste amongst those who made up their minds to get rich quick has been heavy. Numbers have finished by "doing" time, or have robbed themselves of the time allotted to them. Innumerable proverbs attest the fact that this subject has always held a prominent place in the human mind. That the Eastern view of time is widely separated from that of the West is a matter of common observation. It is a difficult thing to make the Oriental believe that there is any necessity for hurry, and even in our own tongue we have the saying: “Time was made for slaves." Once we have probed the cause of the feverish haste which characterizes Western civilization, it will be found to have its source in a false conception of life. The consideration of time in relation to our own existence, and in relation to the Universe, leads to the consideration of the purpose of our existence so far as we can discover it.
