________________ viii the author of Rgarthadipikā, has given detailed information about himself and his fainily in the colophon of each chapter of his work. * His father was Venkațārya and his mother Sundari. He was of Kausika Gotra and belonged to the Pravaras of Viśvāmitra, Astaka and Lohita. He lived in a village called Goinan in the Chola country on the southern bank of the Kaveri river. In the concluding stanzas and in the colophons of his work, his name appears as Mādhava, Mādhavārya and Venkatamadhava. In the Lahore manuscript of the Rgarthadipikā, his name is mentioned in the colophon as Madhavācārya. One Mādhavācāryasūri referred to by Keśa vaswāmin in his Nānārthārnava-samgraha is also identified with Venkatamādhava. Since à sentence in the Rgarthadipikā of this Venkatamādhava is identical with a sentence of Madhava Bhațța quoted by Sāyana, Professor Laksmana Sarup? and Dr. Kunhan Raja? have come to the conclusion that this Madhava Bhatta is identical with Venkaļamādhava. Pandit Sămbaśiva Šāstri, in his introduction to Rk. Samhita, and Professor Bhagavad Datta have endorsed this conclusion. The latter place Venkatamādhava in the 12th century A.D., while the former say that he lived in the 9th or 10th century A.D. Dr. Venkatasubbiah, in his article in the Vol. X, Part II of the Journal of Oriental Research, differs from the opinion of the above scholars and arrives at the conclusion that the commentator Madhava Bhaļţa referred to by Sāyana cannot be identical with Venkatamādhava, the author of Rgarthadīpikā. It is now definitely known that there were two Madhavas before Sāyaṇa who commented on the Rg Veda. There is another Madhava, the son of Indukara, who wrote "Madhava Nidānam' a work on medicine, and whom Pandit D. Gopalācāryalu, in bis introduction to the above work, edited by him, has ascribed to about the 6th century *Vide p. 741 of this Catalogue. His Introduction to Indices and Appendices to the Nirukta. 2. His article on the Chronology of the Vedabhūşyakarás, in the Journal of Oriental Research, Vol. X, Part III, p. 258.
