Under the heads, “Pratipādya Visaya"and" Vaktavya Višeșa,” the subject matter of the work is given in a nut-shell, and an endeavour is inade to furnish a more detailed and critical account regarding each manuscript work. The present volume of the Descriptive Catalogue contains descriptions of 686 manuscripts belonging to the Veda Section. Of these, 304 are originals and the rest duplicates. It may take 15 or 16 more volumes to complete the description of all the manuscripts in the Library 7. The Vedic Section is classified under the following five heads : Samhitās, Brāhmaṇās, Araṇyakās, Upanişads and Mantra praśna. The following few remarks are offered under each head: Rk Samhitā.- Manuscript No. 662 is a commentary called Rgarthadīpikā by Mādbarärya, the son of Venkațārya. The commentary explains, in a systematic manner, the meanings of words from the last Rk of the first varga in the 3rd chapter of the first Astaka up to the end of the first Astaka. As regards the author Madhavārya and his date, there has been a controversy among scholars, and no definite conclusion has yet been reached. Since Sāyana quotes from Madhara Bhatta, it is clear that a person by naine Mādhara Bhatta known also as Madhavārya or Mādhavācārya or simply Madhara lired before him and that he was different from Madhava (Sāyaṇa-Msādhava), brother of Sāyaṇācārya.
