a royal family, why did you throw me in an ocean of misery hard to traverse? Ah! Why did that royal wealth, that sublime affection of my parents, and everything disappear like a miracle? Really, the diversions of fate uplifting for a moment and throwing immediately after a moment-resemble a banner-cloth flying with a gust of strong wind". With her throat chocked with intense sorrow and emotion the poor girl's face was completely wet with a ceaseless flow of tears. On account of hunger and thirst, she took, adada beans lying in corner of the supadun disinterestedly like the mind of a muni. At that very moment, a happy idea came to her mind-"If any mendicant comes here at these juncture I should give him alms first and thereafter I will take my meal".
With this idea uppermost in her mind, she glanced at the door and she saw Sramana Bhagavan Mahavira who was coming there after moving about in regular order from house to house. Thinking Mahavira was extremely handsome and illustrious, and that the meal of adada beans was extremely worthless, and also that, the food material was perfectly unfit for the great saint, she, with a speech faltering with deep sorrow, and with an active flow of tears dropping from her eyes, said :–“O Bhagavän ! although this adada beans is unfit for you, however, please accept this meal with the object of showing favour this unfortunate girl". On seeing the fulfilment of the conditions of his vow, with a steady heart Mahavira extended his two hands. Candană, keeping one of her chained feet outside the door with great difficulty, and keeping the other foot inside the house gave the alms. of adada beans from the supadun to Mahāvīra.
In the picture, Mahavira stand with his to hands extended for alms at the left. Candana is giving the adada beans by her right upraised hand from the supadun kept in her left hand. Her one leg is outside the door and the other inside the house. Here she is represented well-dressed and ornamented. The upper part of the picture, showing the entablature of the house is beautiful. This scene is singularly a unique scene I have seen in any illustrated Kalpasitra MS.
ચિત્ર ૧૫૫. જયસૂરિજીની કલ્પસૂત્રની પ્રત ઉપરથી. શ્રીમહાવીરપ્રભુના કાનમાં ખીલા ઠોકવાના ગોવાળીયાએ કરેલા ઉપસર્ગ
વિહાર કરતાં કરતાં પ્રભુ ષમાનિ નામના ગામે પધાર્યા. ત્યાં ગામ બહાર કાઉસગંધાને ઊભા રહ્યા. એક ગાવાળીએ પ્રભુ પાસે બળદો મૂકીને ગામમાં ગયા. ગાવાળ જ્યારે પાતાનું કાર્ય પતાવીને ગામ બહાર આવ્યા, ત્યારે પાતાના બળદો ત્યાં નહિ જોતાં, તે પ્રભુને પૂછ્યા લાગ્યા કે : “હું દેવાય ! મારા બળદો કાં ગયા ?” પ્રભુ તો ધ્યાનમાં જ ઊભા રહ્યા, તેથી ગોવાળ બહુ જ ક્રોધે ભરાયા. તે દોડતા જઈને શરઢ વૃક્ષના લાકડાના બે મજબુત ખીલા બનાવી લાન્ચે; અને ધ્યાનસ્થ પ્રભુના કાનમાં હચાડાવતી બંને ખીલા ઉંડા પેસાડી દીધા, બંને ખીલાની આગળની ધારે એક બીજાને મળી ગઈ. ખીલાને કાઇ જોઇ જાય અને બહાર ખેંચી કાઢે નહિ, એવા દુષ્ટ ઈરાદાથી, ગેાવાળે અને ખીલાના બહાર દેખાતા ભાગેા કાપી નાખ્યા આ પ્રમાણે ઘાર ઉપસર્ગ થવા છતાં પન્નુ પ્રભુ ધ્યાનથી લેશ માત્ર ન ચમ્યા. કાનમાં ખીલા ઠોકાવવાનું કર્મ પ્રભુએ પોતાના ત્રિપૃષ્ઠ વાસુદેવના ભવમાં શય્યાપાલકના કાનમાં તપાવેલા સીસાના રસીને ઉપાર્જન કર્યું હતું; તે મહાવીરસ્વામીના ભવમાં ઉદયમાં આવ્યું. તે શય્યાપાલકને જીવ ઘણાં ભવભ્રમણ કરી, આ ભવમાં ગેાવાળીએ થયા હતા.
