Many a time is the statement made in the gospels that the apostles themselves did not understand what ras preached to them. Their understanding had to be opened again and again, to carry illumination to their minds. I shall not give extracts from the writings of the early fathers of the Christian Church to show how they felt in the matter: " Then Peter snid ...... You seem to me not to know what a father and & God is : but I could tell you both thence souls aro, and when and how they were mado; but it is not permitted to me not to disclose thesc things to you, who are in such crror in respect of the knowledge of God."-A.N.C.L. vol. iii. p. 232. “......God has veiled his truth.......hc discloses it to those who faithfully follow him."-.-Jbid. p. 270. " Then Peter said: 'Since thercfore you assert that you are willingly awako through desire of hearing, I wish to repeat to you moro carefully, and to explain in their order, thic things that were spoken yesterday without arrangement. And this I propose to do throughout these daily disputations, that by night, when privacy of time and place is afforded, I shall unfold in correct order, and by a straight line of explanation, anything that in the controversy bas not been stated with suflicient fullness.' And then lic began to point out to us how yosterday's discussion ought to havo been conducted, and how it could not be so conducted on account of the contentiousness or the upskilfulness of his opponent; and hors thereforo he only. made use of assertion, and only overthror what was said by his adversary, but did not expound his own doctrines either completely or distinctly.
