It would seem, indeed, that a good deal of the repugnant element was deliberately introduced into the writings to prevent their being read historically. Hints were also thrown out for proper guidance of the seeker in the direction in which lies the hidden sense. He was to seek first of all the meaning of the names used which would be an adequate guide to a really discriminating soul. Jehovah is, thus, Life personified: That mystic name which is called the Tetragrammaton, by which alone they who had access to the Holy of Holies were protected, is pronounced Jehovah, which means, Who 18, and who shall be.'" (Syriac Documents) A.N.C.L. vol. xxiv. p. 177. " "I am << I am " which is also one of the names of Jehovah, again means life. In Deuteronomy (xxx. 20) "Lord thy God" is said to be " 'thy life." In Revelation (i. 18) the Risen Saviour describes himself as he that liveth, and was dead [was deprived of immortality through ignorance]; and, behold. I am alive for evermore [that is, I have now attained to immortal life] "" · Unless there be a clear conception of what is implied in Right Action and how and in what manner it is to be put into practice, and, above all, living examples of Men who have gone on before, it is not very likely that any real progress will be made by the novice. Indeed, men seem to have gone astray a good deal in the past account of the mystic uncertainty surrounding allegorical doctrines, from sheer inability to define the course of proper conduct for themselves. on
