No. IV] RULES FOR ASCETICS IN JAINISM, BUDDHISM & HINDUISM. 69
Batterakāzhārya we find that the condition of an Achelaka means non-covering of the body by cloth, deer-skin, barks, or leaves of trees. It has also been mentioned that ascetics should eat while standing and in the palm of their hands. Begging from a pregnant woman or from a woman engaged in suckling an infant is also prohibited. 3 The faults arising from fireplace, Udukhalas, and vessels, etc. have been mentioned for evidence. The previous arrangement for alms to particular persons have been prescribed as prohibitive. That the Jain monks did not accept invitations like Brahmins appear from a story in the Panchatantra where a Jain sage being invited says: "O Sravaka, why do you, who know Dharma, speak thus ? Are we like the Brahmanas that you are inviting us? We always move about according to rules and if we find a Srāyaka having reverence, we go to his house, and if he prays with great persistence, we eat as much in his house as would enable us to live."6
Naked saints were not peculiar to Jain religion only, but were also found in the Hindu religion specially in the Sivaite secte. The fourth stage of life named Sannyāsa or Bhiksu enjoined that the saints should wear only a Kaupin or remain entirely naked.
