________________ No. IV RULES FOR ASCETICS IN JAINISM, BUDDHISM & HINDUISM. 79 The rule about control of the sense-organs as laid down for the Jaina ascetics is this: 66 Chaksu sodam ghanam jibbhā phasam cha indiya pancha. Sagasagavisayachinto nirohiyabba saya munina." i.e A sage should not see dancing, hear sounds of musical instruments, enjoy scents of sandal, etc., eat food palatable like the same used by householders, or touch articles giving a sense of pleasure. In the Vedic rules for Brahmacharis, the same control of the senses has been ordained. 39 "Nor pungent condiments salt, honey, or meat.' "He shall not use perfumes." is He shall not embellish himself (by using ointments and the like)" Apastamba 1, 1, 2, 23, 25, 27. "Let him restrain his organs from seeking illicit objects." lbid 1, 1, 3, 18. In Gautama we find : "He shall avoid honey, meat, perfumes, garlands, sleep in the daytime, ointments, collyrium, a carriage, shoes, a parasol, love, anger, covetousness, perplexity, garrulity, playing musical instruments, bathing, cleaning the teeth, elation, dancing, singing, calumny, and terror. II. 13. He shall avoid to show himself covered with perfumed ointments or wearing garlands" IX 32. "There is no salvation for him, who is addicted to the pursuit of the science of words, nor for him who rejoices in captivating men, nor for him who is fond of good eating and fine clothing, nor for him who loves a pleasant dwelling." Vasistha. X. 20. "Let him avoid dancing, singing, playing musical instruments, the use of perfumes, garlands, shoes, or a parasol, applying collyrium (to his eyes) and anointing the body." (Baudhayana. 1, 2, 3, 24) In Buddhism, also, Astasilas or eight Silas are prescribed and the seventh and eighth Silas prescribe that the Bhiksus should refrain from dancing, music, playing upon musical instruments and they should not use garlands, ointment, and ornaments.
