________________ Om. THE JAINA ANTIQUARY. "श्रीमत्परमगम्भीरस्याद्वादामोघलाञ्छनम् । जीयात्रैलोक्यनाथस्य शासनं जिनशासनम् ॥" Vol. I. ) No. IV ARRAH (INDIA) March, 1936. Rules for Ascetics in Jainism, Buddhism Hinduism [S. C. GHOSHAL, M.A.B.L., Saraswati, Kavyatirtha, Vidyabhushan, Bharati.] Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are the oldest religious movements in India, where a very large number of different religions have originated and secured innumerable votaries. Though there is evidence about the definite time when Buddhism was first preached, the origin of Hinduism and Jainisin is lost in obscurity. The earliest work on Hinduism is the Vedas, and the later Upanishads and Grihya and Dharma Sutras contain much valuable information regarding the principal tenets and practices of ancient Hindu religion. If we compare these with the same of Buddhism and Jainism, we shall find that the principal tenets and practices are similar in all these religions and the subsequent quarrels and frictions between the different votaries of these religions took rise in minor differences among householders. The sages of all those sects who were advanced in higher planes viewed with equanimity others without the slightest bitterness.
