________________ HEADQUARTERS NEWS.... THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON September 24, 1999 Dhiraj H. Shah President Federation of Jain Associations in North America 135 Morningside Drive Grand Island, New York 14072 Dear Friends: Warm greetings to all those observing Ahimsa Day, sponsored by the Federation of Jain Associations in North America. Violence, in one way or another, affects every individual in every community around the world. By promoting tolerance and understanding, Ahimsa Day reminds us that every citizen must play a role in ending the scourge of violence in our world and fostering peaceful cooperation. My Administration is working hard to confront both the effects and the fundamental causes of violence by helping to restore distressed communities, strengthen families, and sustain an economy that creates jobs for our people. But no government program will be truly successful without the commitment of every individual to restore civility and compassion to his or her community. Only through shared responsibility and a willingness to change can we turn the tide against the forces of violence. I commend all those participating in Ahimsa Day activities for your leadership in this endeavor. You are helping to forge a brighter, more secure future for us all. Best wishes for a successful observance. Brie Curitou 6/JAIN DIGEST. SPRING 2000 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
