Final toll may exceed 5,000 according to Mr. Suresh Shah, editor of "Kutch Mitra" newspaper, The calamity unexpectedly and without warning from meteorologists struck in the form of 120Km (75 mph) winds that caused torrential rains, uprooted electric poles and flooded highways. Most of the casualties of the storm were salt workers or employees of the port at Kandala, 330 miles northwest of Bombay. The government based its death toll on the number of bodies recovered. But thousands of migrant workers were working at the salt pans when cyclone struck. 25-foot tidal wave hit the coast smashing mud-and-thatch huts, blowing away aluminum roofs and made drinking water unsafe. Price of bottled water rose from 10 to 50 Rupees in a region where most workers earn less than 40 Rupees a day. More than 7,000 people are being treated in hospitals for dehydration and other ailments, including injuries from collapsing trees, electricity poles, walls and tin sheets ripped off from roofs.
