Health Information for Travelers to India

Travelers Diarrhea
Infection may cause diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites, which are found in contaminated food or water. Over-the-counter antidiarrheal medicine and antibiotics may be needed.
Malaria
Malaria is a preventable infection that can be fatal ifleft untreated. A drug, Mefloquine, should be started once a week, two weeks before departure. Continue to take it once a week while in India, and up to four weeks after returning. Insect repellant containing DEET in 30%35% strength for Adults and less than 30% for children should be applied regularly to protect against mosquito bites.
Vaccines For the following vaccines, see your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip so that the immunizations can take effect.
- Hepatitis A or Immune Globulin. - Hepatitis B. This vaccine is not needed for every visitor. Plan to receive this immunization if you are planning to stay
longer than 6 months in India, or if you have a risk of blood exposure (such as a hospital worker, for example). - Typhoid vaccination. If you are planning to visit rural areas or are planning to stay longer than 6 weeks, this vaccine is
recommended. - Cholera vaccination is NOT recommended.
Hygiene In order to stay healthy during your stay in India, try to adhere to the following guidelines.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. - Drink only bottled or boiled water. Avoid tap water, fountain drinks, ice cubes, ice cream, & food from street vendors. - Eat only thoroughly cooked food or washed fruits and vegetables - Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.
