It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites, which are found in contaminated food or water. Over-the-counter antidiarrheal medicine and antibiotics may be needed. Malaria Malaria is a preventable infection that can be fatal ifleft untreated. A drug, Mefloquine, should be started once a week, two weeks before departure. Continue to take it once a week while in India, and up to four weeks after returning. Insect repellant containing DEET in 30%35% strength for Adults and less than 30% for children should be applied regularly to protect against mosquito bites. Vaccines For the following vaccines, see your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip so that the immunizations can take effect. - Hepatitis A or Immune Globulin. - Hepatitis B. This vaccine is not needed for every visitor. Plan to receive this immunization if you are planning to stay longer than 6 months in India, or if you have a risk of blood exposure (such as a hospital worker, for example). - Typhoid vaccination. If you are planning to visit rural areas or are planning to stay longer than 6 weeks, this vaccine is recommended. - Cholera vaccination is NOT recommended. Hygiene In order to stay healthy during your stay in India, try to adhere to the following guidelines. - Wash your hands often with soap and water. - Drink only bottled or boiled water. Avoid tap water, fountain drinks, ice cubes, ice cream, & food from street vendors. - Eat only thoroughly cooked food or washed fruits and vegetables - Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it. See your doctor for the above vaccines. Have a safe trip, and bon voyage!
