Kuroot and Utkuroot were brothers who were both monks. On account of performing extreme austerities and leading a pure, restrained life, while working towards their goal of attainment of 'moksha', they achieved many 'labdhi's. They did the 'chaturmasa' in a place called Kunala. The Rain God for some reason had been offended at that time. Not only was there not a single drop of rain, but there were no signs of any rain clouds in the sky. The ignorant people, desperate for rain, began imagining all sorts of things, like, "The monks must have control over the rain". They began harassing the 'mahatmas', someone slandered them, while someone else abused them or pushed them. The two great souls were absolutely engrossed in their silent pursuit. Not only did they not hit the people back, they neither retaliated nor complained. They bore all their afflictions with equanimity. Days went by. The harassment from the people only increased to spitting and slapping them. This went on for days. Then, the people became uncontrollable.
