Thus it is clear that the work is available with two ancient and one modern commentaries. Tradition has taken this work as comprising of five chapters known as Paricchedas, though Bhattacharya makes six of these with a separate chapter to the Karikas on Riti. (5) Vagbhata
of the 3 Vägbhatas known, scholastic tradition accepts that the writer of the Alankara work is the first. The 3 Vagbhațas are(1) Bahada, the son of Soma,' is a Jain Vanika, who flourished at Anahilwad in
Gujarat during the reign ot Siddbaraja Jayasimba (1094-1143). It seems that according to Simhadevagapi, he was the Mahämātya of Jayasimha, son of Karnadeva®. The view finds support in 1969fia of 7419raf (13th century).
The son of Udayana Mehta. He was minister of the Solanki rulers in Gujarat. (3) The son of Nomikum Ira, and the writer of #7871931189. He refers to Vigbhaga
one and is therefore later than him. lo all probabili y, he belongs to the

Other details about our author are as follows : (i) The eulogistic references to Shri Siddharaja Jayasinha support the view of Vig
bhața being his contemporary. The references arc-4.45, 4.76; 4.81; 4.85; 4,132,
4.148 etc. (ii) Simhadevagaại knows him also as is, a probable reference to afara for being

One more Vägbhata is known as a writer of three works on Ayurvedaअष्टासंग्रह; अष्टाङ्गहृदयः and रसरत्नसमुच्चय. He belongs to the last part of the 13th or the first part of the 14th century.
