CHAPTER V.
ON MODIFICATIONS (Paryayas).
We now come to the subdivisions of the second class of aspects.
A modification (paryaya) is that which has the characteristic of changing form, that is, the old modifications of a substance are destroyed and new ones are produced. A paryaya is that which is the subject of production and destruction: a chair, for instance, is a paryaya of matter (pudgala); it came into existence and will in time go out of existence.

There are two kinds of modifications.( paryayas)—
I. Modifications of the essential qualities of a thing or substance. For instance, colour is a quality of matter. The colour of the sea is sometimes green. The sea always has colour, but it is not always green, Green is a modification. The name of th kind of modification is sahabhavin paryaya.
2. Modification of the foreign qualities of a thing. 'Muddiness' would be a quality of water due
