________________ INTRODUCTION notes at the end, used conjoinly with the Glossary, will, I hope, enable even an average student to master the texts thoroughly. As these texts are to be read by our students after they have studied the Uvasagadasao, I could conveniently reduce the volume of my notes, and I have dropped the Varnakavistara,-a feature of my editions of the Uvasagadasao and the Nirayavaliyao. Besides students can easily avail themselves of the English translation of these texts by Dr. Barnett mentioned above.: The text of the work is mainly based upon the Agamodaya Samiti edition. I made use of Barnett's Translation to find out his varients (Bp) in the earlier pages of my edition, but found that the task was not worth the while. On one occasion I have noted the Commentator's varient (Com. p.). It appears both these texts were not much cared for by the Jains and hence the Mss. are generally in indifferent condition. It is on this account that there are not many real variants as such there. The Antagadadasao, Sk. Antakrtadasa, is the eighth Anga of the Jain Canon. It is divided into eight vaggas or chapters and into nintytwo ajjhayanas or lessons. Each of these nintytwo lessons mentions a person, man or woman, who attained a happy end to his or her worldly life, i, e., attained perfection. The narratives of many of these persons are machanically given or referred to. There is one important thing to be noted about this work and it is that the persons mentioned in the first five vaggas lived in an age when Aritthanemi was the Tirthamkara, while the persons mentioned in the last three
