________________ Sumatiharsa Gani and Some Other Jaina Jvotisis -Prof. David Pingree Sumatiharsa Gani was a member of the Ancalagacchal who flourished in Rajasthan in the early seventeeth century. Between about 1610 and 1621 he composed commentaries on a number of jyotisa texts; in this paper, which is based on the information given at the beginning and end of the surviving commentaries, on a perusal of those manuscripts presently accessible to me, and on the colophons, an attempt is made to elucidate the history of his life and to establish bis relationships to other members of the Ancalagaccha. His surviving works are the following: I. A vsitti on the Vivahapatala composed by Brahmarka or Brahmaditya of the Valalya family before 1605, the date of the oldest known manuscript; this Brahmaditya may be identical with the author of the Prasnajnana, also named Brahmarka or Brahmaditya, who was the son of Moksesvara and the grandson of Jyotihsudana;3 he belonged to the Balambha (read Balalya ?) family. For the Vivahapatalavrtti I have used the fragmentary manuscript at Harvard, Sanskrit 405, which consists of ff. 5-16 and 18-19 containing I 14-111 41 and III 45-V 10. The colophons to this manuscript, which begin : ity amcalikamahopadhyayasri 5 sriharsaratnaganinam sisyapamditavadirajasumatiharsaratnaganiviracitayam, inform us of the fact that Sumatiharsa's teacher was the obscure Mahopadhyaya Harsaratna Gani. The only indication of a date in this manuscript is a horoscope which can be dated 5 October 1576 and provides an early terminus post quem; one wonders if it is the horoscope of Sumatiharsa himself (it is entitled simply srijan malagnam). These 14 manuscripts establish the fact that Kalyanasagara was the head of the Ancalagaccha for about 50 years; nos. 3. 4, and 11 further confirm his interest (and that of the Ancalagaccha) in jyotihsastra. The scribe of nos. 13 and 14, Bhavasekhara Gani, copied another manuscript of the Sripatipaddhati with Sumatiharsa's Subodha in the LD Institute (891) for Bhuvanasekhara, the scribe of no. 11, at Sivapurinagara in 1693. The next padas extol Sumatiharsa's guru, Harsaratna, as a teacher of astronomy (sidhanta) and mathematics (patiganita) and as the commentator on, among other, unnamed works, the Brahmatulya or Karanakutuhala of Bhaskara. Unfortunately, no copy of the commentary has yet been located, nor is any other work of Harsaratna known to be extant. Finally, Sumatiharsa states that he completed his vrtti on the Sripatipaddhati at Padmavati on 6 October 1616. This Padmavati probably the same as that in which Dhanaraja wrote, as we shall see shortly; it has been identified with Puskara Dear Ajmer). The epithet srimatparsvasivaprasattinibhrta makes one think it possible that Padmavati is Vindhyavali (modern Bijaulia) on the Reva River in the Uparamala range between Chitor and Bundi; for it was a center of the worship of Parsvanatha and of Siva,' but so also was Puskara. More will be said of this below. III. The Karika, a tika on the Tajikasara composed by Haribhadra or Haribhatta, apparently in 1523. ________________ Sumatiharsa here lists his previous commentaries as being on the Sripatipaddhati (no. II), the Mahadevi composed by Mahadeva in 1316, the Vivahapatala of Brahmarka (no 1), and the Byhatparvamala composed by Purusottama before 1490. It is regrettable that two of these four are no longer in existence. He then states that he completed the Karika at Kherava on 21 February 1621 during the reign of Visnudasa Nrpati, a ruler of whom I have so far succeeded in discovering no other trace. Sumatiharsa himself here assumes the title Samanta or feudatory. Finally, he claims to have written this tika upon the insistence of Ratpa, a relative of his guru, Harsaratna, and of Dhanaraja, whom we will discuss later. The colophon to the Karika names Harsaratna's guru Mahopadhyaya Udayaraja Gani; this information is also given in the colophon of the next work. In the text itself Sumatiharsa uses as his example the horoscope of an individual born on 7 May 1535 and his fifty-ninth anniversary horoscope, dated 7 May 1594. V. A vrtti on the Horamakaranda of Gunakara. Of this unusual work (it seems to be the only extant commentary on the Horamakaranda) there is only one extant manuscript, no. 3368 in the Oriental Institute. Baroda, which is incomplete and which I have not as yet been able to consult. Sumatiharsa's interest in the Horamakaranda is attested to by his citations from it in his vytti on the Sripatipaddhati; it should also be noted that Rajasekhara, the pupil of Buddhisekhara Gani, the pupil of Bhavsekhara Gani (who is probably the Bhavasekhara Gani connected with manuscripts 11, 13, and 14 in the list of manuscripts associated with Kalyanasagara Gani), copied one of the LD Institute's manuscripts (6510) of Gunakara's work in 1678--perhaps from Sumatiharsa's copy. This raises again the possibility--already apparent in the list of Kalyanasagara manuscripts-of the existence of a School of jyotihsastrins in the Ancalagaccha during the seventeenth century. Further evidence in this direction is provided by the Mahadevidipika, a vrtti on Mahadeva's Mahadevi (also commented on by Sumatiharsa, though his vitti is lost) composed by Dhanaraja of the Ancalagaccha at Padmavati in 1635. This Dhanaraja is undoubtedly the scholar who urged Sumatiharsa to compose his Karika on Haribhadra's Tajikasara, and Padmavati then is identical with the locality in which Sumatiharsa wrote his Subodha. For the Mahadevidipika I have used manuscript 689 at the Oriental Institute, Baroda. ________________ Couried the Mchaderepika at Padmavai on 13 May 1635 while the Rastroda Gajasimha was ruling Marwar (1619-1638); the word harsena in the last verse may be an oblique reference to Sumatibarsa or to Harsaratna. It is necessary now to consider again the question of the identification of Padmavati. That Puskara was called by this name in Jaina circles seems to be well attested; and Puskara, like Vindhyavali. had both Jaina and Saiva temples. However, Ajmer (and Puskara almost certainly went with it) was in the possession of the Moghuls from 1556 till 1720, and this fact makes it difficult to explain Dhanaraja's claim to be writing under Gajasimha in 1635, unless some sort of control over it had been granted to Gajasimha as a faithful supporter of the Moghuls. Vindhyavali, on the other hand, has some fainous Saiva temples dating back to the period of the Cauhanas, and an image of Parsvanatha was manifested there in the twelfth century: this fits in very well with the epithet given to Padmavati by Sumatiharsa in the Subodha, but neither is it known that Vindhyavali was called Padmavati nor was it ever in Marwar territory. Thus, the identification of Puskara with Padmavati must remain the more fikely explanation of the facts though Dhanaraja's mention of Gajasirnha remains a problem. This is not the only problem of the Mahadevidipika. For in this work not only does Dhanaraja refer to Thursday 9 March 1637, but also in several different places computations are given for Sirohi in 1063 (the Baroda manuscript was copied a year earlier, in 1662). This date--Saka 1585- is confirmed by the statement that it is 480 years from Saka 1105, the epoch of Bhaskara's Karanakutuhala. The explanation for its occurrence must lie in the fact that 480 years is eight cycles of sixty years, though none of them begins with Mahadeva's epoch, 1318 (Saka 1240). What Dhanaraja's connections with Sirohi might be are not as yet evident. But we do possess some remnants of his activities as a teacher of jyotisa in the form of manuscripts copied by his successors in the Ancalagaccha; these are listed in the Sriprasastisangraha utilized previously. 1. p. 238 no. 888. One final monument that these Jaina jyotisis of Ancalagaccha have left is one of the manuscripts of Dhanaraja's Mahadevidipika preserved at the LD Institute (7129). For it was copied by Buddhisekhara Gani, the pupil of Bhavasekhara Gani, at Rajanagara in 1672 for Rajasekhara Gani of the Ancalagaccha; Rajasekhara, as we have seen, was the scribe of a manuscripts of the Horamak aranda and the pupil of Buddhisekhara. I have little doubt that future explorations of jyotisa manuscripts from Rajasthan will reveal much more concerning the activities of these teachers, commentators, and scribes of jyotisa works, though Sumatiharsa will undoubtedly remain their outstanding representative. 1.
