Longrange plans are shaping up to put this magazine on a solid financial footing. We are taking advantage of technology to better communicate our ideas and opinions. And talking about opinions, let us have yours in the form of Letters to Editor. Together, we can make this magazine even better and improve the Federation of JAINA. Harshad M. Shah. March 1994 2010_02 JAINA Is Ready To Take-Off It has been over eight months since the Pittsburgh Convention when we assumed responsibility for serving the Jain Community of North America. We started with a 10-year plan of JAINA's activities; establishing cordial relations with Siddhachalam and Jain Sangh of Chicago; opening the JAINA Headquarters with Internship program at Buffalo; institutionalizing JAINA and associating youths and women with the organization. Now, we have been functioning as per our current 2-year plan (see page 15-18). We have started a monthly newsletter - JAINA Focus for communicating with community leaders whom we also mailed 'JAINA at a Glance' and initiated town hall type meetings with local communities; introduced professionalism through shared decision making, collective leadership. participative management, leadership workshops, invoicing for annual dues and regular publication of accounts; come up with a suggested Code of Conduct for spiritual and community leaders; prepared eight Jain religious books for children (ready) to go to press); undertaken several community service projects; associated more youths with JAINA committees and are preparing for JAINA's first Youth President's Message President Jagar Jain V.P. - North East Naresh Shah Jagat Jain EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF JAINA First Vice President Manibhai Mehta V.P.-South East Mahendra Dosi Convention; launched Million by Millennium project for the Jain Digest, and recently opened JAINA's regional office in Toronto, Canada. Secretary Ramesh Shah JAIN DIGEST Most of the twenty-six committees have been formed and all of them have been functioning at top speed. Currently, plans are underway to establish the JAINA Charitable Trust. Once this trust comes into being, JAINA will take off on its monumental mission of helping 100,000 Jains of North America to become. messengers of non-violence and setting an example of unity for the rest of the Jains of the World. The publication of Jain Digest has been moved to the headquarters at Buffalo. I want to thank on my behalf and on behalf of the Federation of JAINA the two former chief editors of JAIN DIGEST. Mr. S.A.B. Kumar (Chief editor-1985-89) gave birth to the JAIN DIGEST and nurtured it as an infant. Dr. S.K. Jain (Chief editor 198993) brought the infant JAIN DIGEST to the present stage of adolescence. The new Chief Editor, Mr. Harshad Shah, I am confident, will protect the adolescent JAIN DIGEST till it attains maturity. I welcome the new editor. JAI JINENDRA. V.P. The bill which overturns a 1990 Supreme Court ruling, has been the top legislative priority of a broad coalition of religious groups spanning the theological and political spectrum. "What this law basically says is that the government should be held to a very high level of proof before it interferes with someone's free exercise of religion," Clinton said. According to the leader of the broad coalition that fought for the legislation, the Act marks the end of "a steady drumbeat of bad decisions for religion" in the nation's courts. "All told, more than 60 cases have been decided against religious claimants" since a 1990 Supreme Court ruling made it easier for federal and local governments to pass laws that infringe on religion. The 16 Indian-Americans who were present represented Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Muslim and Christian faiths. The group was coordinated by Mr. Arvind Vora of Long Island. Jains were represented by the following individuals as shown in the picture on the front cover page: Mr. Peter Bheddah of New York (at extreme left), Amrendra Muni of Siddhachalam (behind President Clinton), Mr. Harshad Lakhani of New York (2nd from right), Dr. Dhiraj Shah of Buffalo (4th from right) and Mr. Arvind Vora of Long Island (5th from right). This is in addition to the amounts donated by members directly to JAINA or to the other non-profit organizations. The format of the Swadhyaya program is being altered on an experimental basis. Instead of listening to a cassette every Sunday at 10:30a.m., one of the members will prepare on a given subject, present it to the group and then lead a discussion. Members are encouraged to volunteer to study for and lead Swadhyaya program, participate and help make it a success. Phoenix, AZ The Jain center of Greater Phoenix, Arizona consists of about forty families. About half of them reside in the North Valley and the other half in the East Valley. Due to the great distance between the two valleys the families are not able to get together very often. Instead they both have their own gatherings. The North Valley group has been having Swadhyaya on Thursday nights for two hours. Adults read and discuss Tattvarth Sutra. They also conduct Pathshala for the youths on Sundays. The Pathshala is divided into three classes: the small group (ages 8 and under), the middle group (ages 9 to 14), and the older group (ages 15 and up). The East Valley group also conducts Pathshala and their curriculum consists of teachings on the Jain philosophies. During the Paryushan, six people completed the traditional eight day fast (Atthai). These forty-eight fasts were matched, rather exceeded by the others doing either one, two or three days of fasting. There was thus a total of 104 days of fasting done by about 20 families. The Jain Center of Greater Phoenix also proudly notes the ongoing Varshitap by Mrs. Ushma Bavisi and by Mrs. March 1994 2010_02 Shantaben Gosalia who have already completed nine months. Both of them have planned their Parnu during the first week of May. Furthermore, the Jain Center is planning to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti on April 24, 1994. Tulsa, OK Tulsa Jain Sangh got an inspiration to have their own mandir after attending the Murti Sthapana Mahotsav in Dallas and within two short months celebrated their own Murti Sthapana in Tulsa on September 4-5, 1993. It is housed in a temporary facility of 1200 sq.ft. given by Mukesh Shah until the Sangh decides to build or buy a separate one. The ceremony was graced by Shri Jin Chandra Vijayji (Triputi Bandhu) and attended by many devotees including a bus load of people from Dallas accompanied by two samniji. The ceremony began with a lunch on 4th, followed by a Rath Yatra bringing Murtis of Mul Nayak Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavir, Tirthankar Bhagwan Parshvanath and Namokar Mantra Shila. A highly decorated open van was used for this purpose. Murtis were taken inside while the devotees chanted Mangal songs and Stavans. Atmosphere was really enhanced by sweet musical voice of Shri Vinodbhai Shah from New York area. Eighteen Abhishek and other pujas and ghee bolis were performed in the preparation for the big occasion next day. Following a delicious dinner, there was a lecture by one of the Samaniji and then a cultural program presented by youths and children. One of the dramas dealt with Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavir's life and teachings. The whole day was full of joy and devotion. Next day started with getting the bedi ready with water cleansed and purified with mantras. Panch Kalyanak and other pujas were performed preparing murtis for their Pratishtha and at exactly 12:39 p.m., the auspicious time of Vijay Muhurt, they were installed on the same Bedi. The feeling of divine presence swept through many minds as the festivities continued. Shri Jin Chandra Vijayji gave a brief lecture on Jainism before breaking for lunch. All in all a small Jain community took on a huge task and carried it out very successfully. JAIN DIGEST WEST REGION Chandrakant Parekh Regional Editor Los Angeles, CA Jain Center has elected a new committee which includes Hasendra Shah, President; Virendra Shah, Vice President; Kishor Sanghvi, Secretary; Dinesh Shah, Treasurer; and Nitin Shah, Public Relations. Under the direction of two teachers, Girish Shah and Dr. Balbhadra, 63 children ranging in age from 8 to 16 years participated in the Jain Center Youth Council (JCYC) winter camp organized over the Thanksgiving weekend (November 25-28) at Lutheran Church Campsite in Lake Arrowhead. The chief guest at the camp was Dr. Balbhadra (Bruce Costain) from Toronto, Canada. The course material, distributed to the camp participants in the form of a workbook, was prepared by Dr. Balbhadra. The theme of the camp was Think Jain and it's primary goal was to give our children the basic knowledge and experience of Jainism, and to do so in an enjoyable and challenging manner. The approach was based on Samayika (soul purification) program which included mantras, meditation, and philosophy. The instructions centered around five topics - Atma (eternal and indestructible soul); and four guiding principles for daily living - Ahimsa (nonharming in thought, word, and deed), Anekantavada (accepting and respecting different points-of-view). Aparigrala (not acquiring or accumulating more than one needs), and Karma (understanding the consequences of one's actions in thought, word, and deed effecting one's future). The children conducted and presented a samayika program and a talent show which included dances, Jain rhymes, Jain rap, and several skits on non-violence, vegetarianism, say no to drugs, and other social issues. To assess the understanding and effectiveness of the course material, the children were required to complete a test on the last day of the camp. High test scores achieved by majority of the students attest to the success of the camp. It is interesting to note that 7 Page #10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ by being away from the family as well as by avoiding such distracting influences as TV and video games, the children were able to learn and grasp an impressive amount of religious knowledge in such a short time. Ten students were recognized for achieving the highest scores in three different age groups. In addition to the classroom studies, the children were allowed ample free time to enjoy the surroundings of the campsite, to go on hiking, as well as to make new friends and develop fellowships among the participants. JAYA, Jain Association of Young Adults, has been formed to coordinate social and religious activities, as well as to share experience and knowledge of mutual interest between young adults of age 18 and over. Kalyanji Mota (714) 527-2836 is coordinating the formation effort. In November 1994, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will present a landmark exhibition, The Peaceful Liberators: Jain Art from India, which will illustrate the Jain principles, teachings, mythology, and cosmology. The exhibition will include educational and community outreach programs, and will travel to Fort Worth, New Orleans and London. Jain Center donated over $7,000 to the Maharastra Earthquake Relief Fund through JAINA. Donations to help the victims of the devastating earthquake which struck the Los Angeles area on January 17 can be sent to JAINA or the Southern California Jain Center. San Diego, CA Jain Society has elected new committee directors which include Praful Doshi, Deepak Kothari, Manoj Maniar, Rohit Saraiya, and Kamlesh Shah. Jayshri Shah and Sudha Vora have been elected to the food committee. With an objective of preserving and passing on our Jain heritage to the younger generation, the Jain Society has initiated swadhiya for adults and pathshala for children. Kokila Doshi led a swadhiya session on Samayika - Importance of Sambhav. Deepak Kothari led a discussion on Pratikraman and Twelve Vratas. The first pathshala, organized for two age groups, was well attended. 8 2010_02 San Francisco, CA One more chapter was written in the history of Jain Center of Northern California when it organized a five-months visit by Saman Sthithprajna and Saman Shrutprajna to the Bay area. The visit from May 21 to November 20, 1993, the longest stay of any Jain scholar in North America, was a phenomenal success. During their stay, Samans carried out a three dimensional program of Anuar(minor vows pertaining to common people), Preksha Dhyan (meditation technique), and Jivan Vigyan (science of living) initiated by Acharya Shri Tulsi from Ladnun, Rajasthan, India. Upon their arrival, Samans participated in many programs and activities including lectures on Jain philosophy, Preksha Dhyan classes, camps, picnic with religious discourses, and celebration of Puryushan Purve and Mahavir Nirvana. In addition, Saman Stithprajnaji delivered lectures at various universities and organizations where the audience was mainly non-Jains and Americans. Shri Acharya Tulsi's successor designate, Yuvacharya Mahaprajnaji. developed Preksha Dhyan meditation technique after intense study of books on Jainism and conducting experiments on himself for over two decades. Preksha Dhyan improves and enhances physical, social, mental, emotional, intellectual, occupational and spiritual health, and with regular practice, can open the door of moksha. Several teachers who had been previously trained by Samans, trained 35 new students for the "train-the-trainer" course on Preksha Dhyan meditation. The training course on advanced Preksha Dhyan techniques was offered for the first time outside of India. Preksha Dhyan classes in Hindi, Gujarati and English are now being conducted throughout the Bay area. Over 60 lectures delivered by the Samans covered a wide spectrum of subjects including Navkar Mantra, Nav Tatava, Karmavad, Science of Living, Anuvrat and others. Saman Shri Sthithprajna would begin a session with a prayer, ten minutes of meditation, and a geetika, followed by a 90-minutes lecture on the main topic. The lecture material was well organized. Saman is a lively orator and uses humor, appropriate examples, scientific basis, and common sense Jain philosophy to explain and JAIN DIGEST simplify the subject matter. The lectures have been recorded on audio tapes. About 45 people attended a threeday Preksha Dhyan camp organized at Sands Motel in Dunnigan, Ca. About 500 people attended a picnic which included Preksha Dhyan meditation, yogic exercises, and lectures by Samans and Kiranbhai Parekh. During their entire stay, the Samans were able to keep the interest and spirit of the whole community alive and vibrant. Their visit provided a continuous opportunity to learn, to understand, to practice and to realize the benefits of Jainism. Everyone was very impressed by their in-depth knowledge, vinay, vivek, humor and never tiring attitude. The feedback and testimonials received from the attendees regarding the beneficial changes in their lifestyles attest to the success of the event. Behavior modification including positive attitude, and improved moral, social and occupational conduct, are some of the benefits cited by the participants. To keep the spirit of Acharya Shri Tulsi's Anuvrat movement alive, everyone present on the last day of Saman's lecture took anuvrat for one year. Examples include weekly fasting, observing a period of silence during the day, quitting bad habits, giving up one's favorite food, and others. We will set up some small exhibitions with a few posters and a table of handouts to give to interested people in and around the Jain community. We will also offer the centers to buy books and videos on these subjects for their libraries. We are preparing a list of all such reference material that each Jain Center should consider buying. We will like each Jain Center to provide a small budget for such projects, in the range of $100 to $1,000 for this year, depending upon the size of the Center Many of our center assets, now a days, run into several hundred thousand dollars, so relatively this is a small amount to ask for. Considering the fact that animal compassion and vegetarianism is a very fundamental principle of Jainism, and that we have done practically nothing for it until now in America, even though we have been here for over two decades, this is only a modest request. These organizations included Rotary International, Lions Club International, Swaminarayan and many others. After talking to all of these groups, JAINA has decided to join hands with the Lions Club International. The Lions Club has adopted a village Kawatha, Umergaon Taluka, Osmanabad District. It is located 45 miles south of Latur. JAINA will contribute 50% of the cost of the Primary School. This will amount to US $17,500. The school will be named 'Kawatha Primary School' donated by 'Federation of JAINA.' JAINA will also contribute 50% of the cost of 50 houses. The standard house size will be 250 sq. ft. JAIN DIGEST MARCH 1994 Page #17 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ JAINA'S TWO YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN (1993-1995) (These four pages have been sponsored by the Long-Range Planning Committee) well established and financially secure is graying. The youth are growing up. We have tried to provide a place not only to hang our hats but also a place where our youth can mingle by building Temples and Cultural Centers throughout North America. As we look at the year 2003 and beyond we must ask ourself where we want to be in the next 10 years. As we look back at the inception of Jaina in 1981, and where it stands today; we can say very proudly that we have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. If you have ever seen Arnold Schwarzenagar in a movie you have seen the muscles that won him all of the body building competitions, you have seen the physical power and mental toughness. You knew as soon as you saw him that it took years to develop all that power. What is more important, is that it started out with a plan. To reach his full potential he created a plan and stuck to it and that's how he became so powerful. We at Jaina want to do the same thing, I am pleased to report that we are in the process of finalizing our long-range plan for the coming 10 years (1993-2003). We have formed a committee which has a representative from each corner of North America. We sought your input in our last Jain Digest for our ten year plan. I want to thank those who have already shared their views with us; and I request those of you who are thinking of doing so to please forward your comments at your earliest. We JAINS in North America are at cross roads in our life. The 1st generation which is OBJECTIVES 1.1 Publication and distribution of entry level Jain religious book in English. 1.2 Translation, explanation of Jain Poojas' in English 1.3 Encourage participation by all Jain Centers for JAINA bulletin Board Services. The style and substance of the long range plan will include: Analysis of where we are today Dreaming up dreams together as to where we want to be in year 2003 C. How we are going to make those dreams a reality. We are going to have specific goals with various objectives which will delineate how and when we are going to achieve those objectives and the method by which we will measure the results. But have we ever considered, what the animals behind the bars feel like? WHAT IF IT WERE YOU? Would you like a lifetime of confinement in a room, without ever having done any crime? Would you like to perform abnormal acts, for the fear of being whipped by your trainer? We also buy pets for company. Aren't they cute and beautiful? But again, is it their natural life? Is there any advocate for these poor, voiceless animals? LOS ANGELES 59. Chandrakant & Hasmita Parekh 60. Surji & Urmila Mehta Yes, we, all the Jains, the followers of Mahavir Bhagwan, are here to protect the animals. We should not use animals for our entertainment. We should not patronize those theme parks. We should not buy cage pets, such as birds, fish and hamsters, either. Find out how the animals are trained. Learn how the confined animals have stress, and filthy and unhealthy environment. They die early, because of us. SAN FRANCISCO 61. Harilal & Jyoti Shah 62.
