Planning and construction of this temple was done with the deep thought of unity and togetherness of all Jains now and for our future generations. Primary goal is unity of all Jains. On Behalf of the Jain Center of America I sincerely thank one Sadharmik brother member and his family as construction coordinator who achieved this goal. Many visitors have visited our Temple during and after Pratishtha Mahotsav and written many admiring comments in the Temple visitor note book of which a few are published in this souvenir. These comments from visitors all around the world reflect an example of Jain unity at our center. I urge all members to continue to be united with their open mind and heart. On behalf of the Jain Center of America I thank all Acharyas, Bhattarakaji, Gurujis, Sadhvis, Pundits and scholars who blessed the occasion and helped us to make the Pratishtha Mahotsav a grand success. This Souvenir will be a life long memory to all of us as it contains photos and names of the members who have participated in the Pratishtha or Bharai of Pratimajis and names all participants who have donated $501.00 and more towards any one ritual or any one event. On behalf of JCA Board of Trustees and Executive committee I thank all members who have generously donated for the Pratishtha Mahotsav, towards the construction of the temple and those who gave loans to JCA for timely completion of the construction. We request them to continue their generosity in the future, which will allow us to maintain this Temple in proper condition to pass our rich religious heritage to our future generations. We are thankful to Convener, Co-Conveners, past Board of Trustees and past Executive Committee, all Committee Co-coordinators and committee members, all volunteers, without them this would not have been possible to make celebration of the Pratishtha Mahotsava grand success. I thank all members and their families of the Jain Center of America who has participated in the Pratishtha Mahotsav for the success. My special thanks to C. J. Kothari who has spent unaccountable amount of time and effort to prepare this post Pratishtha Souvenir and also the great help and efforts of Ramesh V. Shah. The Ashtapad Tirth crystal mountain carving is going well in India at Jaipur and anticipated completion towards end of 2007. Pratishtha Mahotsav of Ashtapad Tirth is expected to be in 2008. Our center is blessed to have an Ashtapad Tirth, a generous donation from one Sadharmik brother and his family. This is the one of a kind Ashthpad Tirth in the world. JCA is planning to invite Jains around the world to witness the Grand Ashatapd Tirth Pratishtha Mahotsav celebration. I am requesting all members to help the Center to make this upcoming Ashtapad Tirth Pratishtha Mahotsav successful Temple activities are increasing and all traditions are participating well. On behalf of JCA I request all to participate actively and your help in any form will be very much appreciated. If we have made any errors or forgotten to thank anyone we ask your forgiveness. "MICHCHHAMI DUKKADAM" Jawahar A. Shetti Chairman Board of Trustees JAIN CENTER OF AMERICA - NEW YORK Page #4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Sadharmic Brothers and Sisters, Jai Jinendra Nearly 400 days ago, we had the glorious Consecration Ceremonies for our temple at the Ithaca St. New York. We waited for years and years to have our own Shikharbandhi Temple, and spent years of manpower and tons of money. We were given the date of 18" June 2005 - as The Auspicious Day for Pratishtha. We planned elaborate Pratishtha Celebrations for eight days of unbelievable activities. Of course the 19" June 2005 became the very First Day for the fully functioning Dream Temple. We had many committees to oversee various aspects of the Pratishtha Mahotsav. My co-conveners worked very hard overseeing each and every detail from all the committees, made valuable suggestions, rulings, and even involved themselves in day-to-day workings of some committees. Some members loaned us the funds necessary to enter into commitments. Indeed on behalf of our Center, I am ever so grateful to them. In May 2004, many of us made a pilgrimage to Surat to participate in the 'Anjanshalaka' 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony, at the end of which we greeted Suratwasi with a 'Rath Yatra' with "Indra Indrani" on Elephant back, through the streets of Surat. Our fifteen hundred members celebrated Nagar Pravesh in New York, with our Lords in a grand Rath Yatra from our 74" Street Temple to the Ithaca St. Temple. During the Pratishtha Mahotsav, we had yet another Rath Yatra adorned by our distinguished guests and over thousand members including 151 ladies carrying the Kumbh, circumscribing the Ithaca Street Temple. Hats off to our Procession Committee! We started with Lord's Janmakalyanak celebration with Indra Indrani Ballet, at the Hindu Temple Auditorium. We had multiple Poojans and Rituals, on all the floors of the Temple during the week of Pratishtha, followed by religious discourses from our learned guests. Some evenings we had elaborate cultural programs, while some were reserved for Garba Raas. Our Swamivatsalya Committee was on over drive and provided feasts fit for the royalties, each and every morning and evening, for all the ten days. None of the committee's role was less than others. They all performed very well. The credit for the Grand Success of the Pratishtha Mahotsav belongs to each and every member of all the committees, and to all our members for their seamless co-operation. I am grateful to you all. My heartiest thanks also extend to your family members who put up with all the inconveniences, for all those months prior to the Pratishtha. Our distinguished guests, we were honored by your presence, and by your blessings. Thank you all very much, for coming and to make our experience so meaningful. Please excuse us for our shortcomings, they were unintentional. "MICHHAMI DUKKADAM" I end quoting: as aptly expressed by W. Wordsworth in his poem on 'The Daffodils" For oft, when on my couch I lie, in vacant or in pensive mood; They flash upon that inward eye, Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the {daffodils. {my Sahadharmic members celebrating the Pratishtha Dilip Mukhtyar MD Convener Pratishtha Mahotsav 2005 New York, USA Jain Education For Pre & Personal use only jainelibrary or Page #5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Shri Neminath Shri Parshvnath 184 a bree Shri Gautamswami MAHAVIRSWAMI TEMPLE Shri Mahavirswami Shri Adinath Chaumukhji Shri Sambhavnath APAR Shri Shantinath Padmavati Devi - Laxmi Devi - Saraswati Devi Chakreshwari Devi - Shri Vir Manibhadra - Shri Nakoda Bhairava Shri Ghantakaran Vir - Shri Gaumukhi Yaksh - Shri Bhomiyaji Shri Simandharswami Page #6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ HIVAWCHIVAHAM ЗІЯМЗТ Sadharmic Brothers and Jardinendaal Nearly 500 dan York. It was a pleasant experience being part from the moment of inception to un precedented moments of Pratishtha at the Ceremony and the Installation of Images, murtis, in 2005 from June 10 to the 19th at the Temple. I admired your peaceful and loving unity in diversity and the generosity of Dr. Shah and all. This is the spirit of true Dharma. The other day some of the young Jains came to me showing concern that the sectarian beliefs and rituals will get in the way of maintaining true Dharma and Jain unity. It is now the duty of parents to remove their fears and doubts by practicing Ahinsa and through under-standing show Anekantavad in their actions. Understanding others' needs and points of view is very essential for religious unity, which is called Anekantavada. I am sure that all of you as a team will maintain the priceless treasure of unity and will cherish it. Jain Dharma is clarity, purity and charity. Jain Dharma is not dogma or mere rituals. It is a deeper experience of Parmatma in Atma: two sides of one coin. It is so that one can have a way of purposeful living. In the end it helps an individual to take an exit that opens an entry into truth, beauty and goodness. Temple is a place which invites people from all walks of life, regardless of their caste, creed, post or position, to realize the feeling of brotherhood and sisterhood in the presence of the Vitarag Bhagwan. My blessingful good wishes to all of you, also to those who were performing the ceremonies in sacred harmony, and to all who are participating for liberation from the demands of desires. Love and blessings, Chitrabhanu 35 Page #58 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Dear Sirs, It is a matter of great pleasure that you are celebrating the first anniversary of the renovated Jain temple on June 18, 2006.at New York. I was fortunate to remain present to attend the celebration and the prestigious occasion in June 2005. Now I wish you all the best for its first anniversary and wish that more and more people will take the advantage of it for their spiritual progress. It is an unique place where all the sects of Jain community can do their "Sadhana and Aradhana." With Best Wishes. Prof. Rajendra Shah, Mumbai. Date: 5/3/2006 It is a great pleasure for me that the Jain center of America (N.Y.) is publishing souvenir on the occasion of first aniversary of Pratishtha Mahotsav. I recollect the sweet memories of the Queen's Derasar where I first gave swadhyaya in 1987. Shetti Chairman Jain Center of America 43-11 Ithaca Street Elmhurst, NY 11373 When I visited your magnificent temple on the occasion of the Pratishtha Mahotsav last year, I was overwhelmed and deeply moved by its beauty, architecture, and grandeur. The layout you have used could serve as a role model for the entire Jain community not only for the fellow Jains in the United States but also for all Jains living in other parts of the world. It should serve the needs of all sects of Jainism under one umbrella and indeed represents a unique symbol of ANEKANTWAD in practice. Please accept my heartiest congratulations for this great achievement and pass on my regards to all whose vision, dedication and hard work made it possible. I am sure the temple would prove to be a source of inspiration and serve as a beacon to many people for years to come. Kindly accept my best wishes on the auspicious occasion of the First Anniversary of the Pratishtha and for every continuing success in the years ahead. With Warmest Personal Regards, Anop R. We have gone through making many models over last 4 years. First model was 1 X 1' in size which was 2D- subsequently we developed 3D models and went through 3' X 3' size to 7' X 6' size to 14.6' to 12.7'X 5'. 12 MARBLE MODEL - FULL SIZE Purpose of making this marble model was to establish a base line and give workers and carvers a design so that carving in crystal can be done correctly. Any mistake or carving error will create a problem in the sense it will be very difficult to replace any of the crystal blocks which are 60 in numbers. Gokhalas in marble model has regular carving and design. We were told earlier to do Asha Pratihari design for individual Gokhala but due to carving issues, we could not do the same in the marble model. To our help and guidance came a message unexpectedly from Muni Shri Ramya Darshan Vijayji. He saw our pamphlet, which is in circulation for last 3 to 4 years. He gave us some suggestions and brought out some mistakes in the pamphlet including errors in design and carving of stories. When we received this letter, we were glad that someone is there to guide us further in this religious under taking. Since then we had 4 marathon meetings and lot of design changes were agreed upon. This includes Asta Pratihari design for each Gokhala. This we are doing now on all 24 crystal Gokhalas. This is what is taking a toll on time and hence further delays. Mountain work made out of these 60 crystal blocks is in progress. If you see the model at the temple upper part of model has a shape of mountain peaks. It was brought to our notice that there should be Shikhar on the top of Gokhalas i.e. on top of temple and not the mountain peaks. This is a temple and should have Shikhars and Kalash. As the crystal blocks were all ready cut to fit our design, we had to make necessary changes in blocks to make 5 Shikhars design on the upper part of the mountain. Steel frame to hold the blocks is ready. Lower part of mountain along with the steps is already set. Carving design on steps will be done later. In the middle part, 24 Gokhalas are scooped out in crystal blocks to make space for statues. Once this is completed, one will start carving Asta Pratihari for each Gokhala. Page #116 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Upper part of mountain, which has a design change to (5) Shikhars is on hold at present. Collecting the stones is another major effort which should be mentioned. MERCURY OPAL BLUE TOPAZ LAPIS Further to our surprise all our carvings for stories (which also has increased in number from 9 to 16 as we learned more) were not approved by Muni Shri. There were lot of errors religiously and anatomically as well. We went through a lengthy discussion, suggestions and corrections to finally decide on paper at least how to do our stories correctly. We have started now carving the stories in stones with guidelines established. List of carvings for STORIES 1. Janma Kalyanak 10. Rani Veermati (Damyanti Story) 2. Parna 11. Padlipt Suri- story 3. Samavsaran Shri Rishab Deo 12. Mahavir Swami/ Gautam Swami 4. Bharat Chakravarti requesting to go to Ashtapad 5. Arisha Mahal Story 13. Gautam Swami climbing Ashtapad 6. Nagkumar & Sagar Sons with help of sunrays 7. Bali Muni & Rawan story 14. Gautam Swami on Ashtapad 8. Rawan Mandodari Bhakti 15. Kheer Parna and Tapas story 9. Dharmendra- Rawan dialogue 16. Triyank Zambak Deo and Gautam Swami We are proposing a change for Pratishtha to May 2008 (Akhatrij) instead of 2007. This will give also give enough time for carving work to be completed. Now Varsi Tap can start in May 2007 and we'll have Parna in May 2008 coinciding with Pratishtha ceremonies. JAINA has a convention in July 2007 at Raritan Center, N.J. This change will avoid overlapping of two functions. Note 1. Collection of literature-Volume IX on Ashtapad is ready now. All volumes I to IX are available in our library. 2. If you are visiting Jaipur, you are welcome to see making of Ashtapad. 3. On 27th of May 2006, a major Launch event being hosted by Institute of Jainology at Delhi. India and United Kingdom Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Smt. Ambika Soni will preside. Hon. Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh will launch the catalogue describing Jain Manuscripts. We are planning to exhibit Ashtapad Statues there for the benefit of attendees, if permitted due to security reasons. 2. Ashtapad research tour will leave for Nepal on 28th of May for 24 days on way to Tibet and will return on 21" of June. Hope to bring some useful information on research project. Our basic plan about Ashtapad is to visit various MUTH and meet Buddhist Monks, discuss with them and check their old books and Granths and see what we can find in them about Shri Rishabh Deo, Ashtapad and Jain religion. A preliminary research is already underway at Dharamshala by Dr. Thomas Parmar. under guidance of Shri KumarpalBhai Desai. Secondly we will be going around Kailash Mansarovar region and look for any evidence about the basic evidence of existence for Ashtapad. We are honored and feel privileged that Jain Center of New York has given us the opportunity to become the editors for all Pratistha related information, which you all have received time to time. It looked too easy when we accepted the responsibility to publish post Pratishtha souvenir but became more & more challenging to compile all details for each rituals of pratishtha/sthapana etc. and also to find and select best suitable 1 or 2 photo from 5000 to 6000 photos. Our committee is very much thankful to all the participants and all of you for keeping such a good patience. We have tried to give the best details possible, however if we have missed or hurt feeling of any one by ignorance, we beg forgiveness from bottom of our heart. Michhami Dukkadam. Once again I am thankful to all who helped us for presenting this souvenir before you, specially Shri Ramesh V.Shah Committee member and a veteran of JCA, Shri Vijay H.Shah for providing Photographs, Mittal Graphics for their cooperation for printing and keeping patience in delay and many others who directly or indirectly helped us in preparing this souvenir.
