________________ 122 THE WAY OF LIFE When we examine this point in relation to some other factors, this arrangement of expenditure .expounded in the Nithishastra is quite good. If you save some money every year, you will not have to worry when the necessity arises to celebrate a marriage etc. If you do not save money, you will have to bear the burden of worry when some special occasion arises. Some people do not care to save money at all. They spend away all their income. THE USEFULNESS OF SAVINGS There is a family in Bombay. There were two carning members in the family; the father and the son. The father earned two thousand rupees a month; and the son earned onc and a half thousand. But the expenses of the family and wasteful expenses were so large that they could not save anything. There was also a girl in the family. She was to be married. The young man was married. His wife was a sensible woman. Soon after she came to the mother-in-law's house, she earned the affection of all. She also understood the financial condition of the family. She found that the members of the family were spending money wastefully. They were not saving anything. But whom could she advise to refrain from extravagance? She could not give any suggestions to her father-in-law and she was afraid of giving advice to her husband. She thought, “Probably they will be displeased if I give them any suggestions. They may also mistake me”. She searched for another method. She said to her husband, "Please try to secure a transfer to some other place. We shall stay out for two years. I am not feeling at home in this city”. She continued to prevail upon her husband every day to seek a transfer and he tried for a transfer and got it. Her father-in-law, her sister-in-law were a little displeased but the husband and the wife went away to another town. He was working in the L.I.C. and now he got a salary of two thousand rupees a month. The young woman managed her household with great prudence and economy. ...
