________________ VIVEKACŪDĀMAŅI 483 kulyāyāmatha nadyām vā sivakşetre'pi catvare parņam patati cet tena taroh kim nu śubhāśubham 11 Whether a leaf of a tree falls in riverlet or river or in the holy place dedicated to Śiva, or where four roads meet, what does it matter, good or evil, to the tree? 561 पत्रस्य पुष्पस्य फलस्य नाशवत् देहेन्द्रियप्राणधियां विनाशः । नैवात्मनः स्वस्य सदात्मकस्या . Tralga: aperta ga: 1149 11. patrasya puşpasya phalasya nāśavat dehendriyaprāņadhiyām vināśaḥ, naivātmanaḥ svasya sadātmakasyā nandākster vşkşavadāsta eşaḥ 11 The destruction of the body, the sense-organs, the breath and the buddhi are like the destruction of the leaf, the flower and the fruit. It does not mean the destruction of one's true nature as the blissful ātman which survives like the tree. 562 प्रज्ञानघन इत्यात्मलक्षणं सत्यसूचकम् । अनुद्यौपाधिकस्यैव कथयन्ति विनाशनम् ॥५६२ ॥ prajñānaghana ityātmalakṣaṇam satyasūcakam 1 anūdyaupādhikasyaiva kathayanti vināśanam 11 The nature of the ātman is truly indicated by saying it is compacted of prajñā (higher wisdom). Having said that it is the Real, the upādhi only is spoken of as subject to destruction. 563 अविनाशी वा अरेऽयमात्मेति श्रुतिरात्मनः । प्रब्रवीत्यविनाशित्वं विनश्यत्सु विकारिषु ॥ ५६३ ॥ avinäśī vā are'yamātmeti śrutirātmanah 1 prabravityavināśitvam vinaśyatsu vikäri şu 11 The śruti speaking of the ātman says: 'Verily, my dear, the ātman is indestructible', and declares its indes
