મેારી અન સ્ટેઈન આગળ વધતાં કહે છે કે એક વ્યક્તિએ પૂર્વજન્મની માન્યતાની તરફેણમાં મહાન સિદ્ધિ પ્રાપ્ત કરી હેાવા છતાં તેણે તે વિષયમાં કશી જાહેરાત ન કરતાં મૌન રહેવાનું જ પસંદ કર્યું. તેને જ્યારે તેના મૌનનું કારણ પૂછવામાં આવ્યુ' ત્યારે તેણે કહ્યું કે, · આ બધા અનુભવાને હું મારા ખૂબ જ અંગત અનુભવ તરીકે છુપાવી રાખું છું, કેમકે મને પહેલેથી જ ખ્યાલ છે કે આવી વાતા ઉપર વિશ્વના માનવા શું ટીકા-ટિપણા કરશે ?’૧૦
પશ્ચિમના દેશોમાં આત્માની અમરતાનાં ગીત ગાવાનું કેટલું બધુ... મુશ્કેલ છે! આમ હાવા છતાં એ અંગેના ઊહાપાહ કરીને જાહેરમાં માથુ' ઊંચકનારાએ પણ ત્યાં છે. તેઓને કેવી હિંમતથી કામ લેવું પડતું હશે !
કિલિ’ગ નામના વૈજ્ઞાનિકે તા મેારી બસ્ટેઈનને કહ્યું હતું કે મને તેા ખૂબ દિલગીરી થાય છે કે સમાજ તમારા આ વિચારને જુદી રીતે રજૂ કરશે કે તેમાં કાપકૂપ કરી નાંખશે. જેએ વિરોધી છે તે તે આ બધી વાતને ઊંધી ચીતરીને જ રજૂ કરશે; કેમકે છેવટે તે પશ્ચિમના લોકો આશાસ્પદ જીવન કરતાં ભયાનક મૃત્યુને જ વધુ વિચારે છે અને વળગી રહે છે. એટલે આ લેાકેા આવી વાતાને કદારા વહેમ ' કહીને હસી પણ નાંખે.૧૧
અહી એક એવા પણ પ્રશ્ન ઉપસ્થિત થઈ શકે છે કે જો આ રીતે દરેક જીવના પૂ જન્મ હેાય જ, અને ત્યાં તેણે ઘણું ઘણું અનુભવ્યું પણ હાય, તેા દરેક જીવને શા માટે પોતાના ભૂતપૂર્વ અનુભવાની સ્મૃતિ નથી થઈ આવતી? આ પ્રશ્નના સમાધાનમાં જૈન દાનિકા તે કહે છે કે એવી જાતનું મતિજ્ઞાનાવરણીય નામનુ` કમ છે, જેના રજકણા આત્મા ઉપર વધુ પ્રમાણમાં ચાંટી ગયેલ હાય ત્યારે ભૂતપૂર્વ અનુભવાની સ્મૃતિ થઈ શકે નહિ;
