General Editors' Foreword
The Prakrit Text Society has great pleasure in publishing herewith a part of the third Kanda, the Jujjha-kamḍa, as Part III (1) of Svayambhudeva's Riṭṭhamemicariya (Aristanemicarita) or Harivaṁsapurana edited by Professor Ramsinh Tomar. Due to several reasons including printing difficulties this part appears after a lapse of three years after the pubulication of the Jayava-kamḍa. This Part (Sandhis 33-63) contains the text of the first thirtyone Sandhis out of sixty Sandhis of the Jujjha-kamda. We had planned to inclnde in this part the text up to Sandhi 55, the rest of the Jujjha-kamḍa forming the second part, But fearing that it would involve further delay, we are publishing whatever was ready. Hence the discrepancy in pagination. Svayambhu has closely followed Vyasa's Mahabharata for the main narrative accomodating of course characteristically Jain variations. For the accounts of various battles in the Bhisma Parvan and the Drona-parvan he is guided by the Mahabharata. He drops all the long descriptions, dialogues etc. and presents an epitome of the incidents and scenes. A discussion of the manner of his utilization of the Mahabharata we reserve for the subsequent part
