________________ PREFACE After the Publication of the I Volume of Jayanta Bhatta's Nyāyamanjari by the Oriental Research Institute, Mysore, there has been a persistant demand from scholarly quarters of many countries of the world for the publication of its 11 Volume, though there were already two other editions of this work. This proves the inherent merit of this great and unique work of Nyāya Philosophy as well as the quality of the new edition. Therefore it was our solemn duty to meet the demand of scholars for the II Volume and I feel extremely happy that we are able to present it now, with notes etc. Jayanta Bhatta : Kashmir was the cradle of Sanskrit literyar activity during three centuries (ECC-1100) and produced many illustrious writers. Not only belles letters and thetoric, but many śastraic treatises were composed in this period. Jayanta was one of the brightest stars that illumined the firmament of such activity, both poetic and sastraic during that period. There are five works of Jayanta known to us viz., Nyāya kalikā, Nyāyapallava, Nyāyamañjarī, Āgamadambara (an allegorical drama) and a Vritti on Astādhyāyi. The first three are works on Nyāya Philosophy, while the fourth belongs to the domain of pure literature. The Nyāyakalikā is a direct and brief commentary on
