________________ THE TREE MEDITATION The reforming of society for the better has been a concern among some social scientists and community minded persons. Meditation or a method of focusing the energy of consciousness has seldom been thought of as a way to reform society. In this story Guruji describes an experience that he had while attending a seminar for reforming society. Years ago I was invited to attend a seminar in India for reforming society. The day was very hot and during a break in the rather long and boring speeches, I wandered out of the hall alone to get a breath of fresh air. Nearby there was a great tree that offered shade and coolness in the heat. I went to the tree and I sat under its branches which I noticed were dry and dead-looking in places. Since I had a headache, I decided to do a special tree meditation in which one draws energy from a tree for healing. After five or ten minutes my headache was cured by the tree. Then I thought it was only right that I return the energy to the tree. I began to focus my consciousness upon the diseased-looking branches and leaves. 84 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
