Kumarapala had made two or three pilgrimages to these holy places at different times. There are various reasons for holding this view. Firstly, Kumarapala had been under the influence of Hemasuri for a period of more than fourteen years; secondly, Jinamandanagani, in the general outline of Kumarapala's work, says that the king made seven pilgrimages; thirdly, Rajasekhara puts to his credit two pilgrimages-one to Satrunjaya, Giranara and Devapattana and and the other to Cambay. We may, therefore, give credence to the statement of Jayasimhasūri, Jınamandanagani and Rajasekhara that Kumarapala visited Devapattana and paid obeisance to Chandraprabhu.*

Besides proclaiming 'amari,' and taking the twelve VOWS Vows of a Jain layman, Kumarapala showed his zeal for Jainism by erecting numerous temples in various places. Somaprabhasūri, his contemporary, says that Kumarapala built so many temples to the Tirthankaras that it was impossible to count them.50 He is supported by
