જાન ગંથર (John Gunther ) એ ઇગ્લેંડના, આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય ખ્યાતિવાળા, મહાન રાજદ્વારી લેખક છે. તેમનાં પુસ્તકા ટૂંકું વખતમાં જ હનાની સંખ્યામાં વેચાઇ જાય છે. ઘેાડા વખત પહેલાં તેમણે એશિયાની ભીતરમાં ( Inside Asia) નામક એક પુસ્તક લખ્યું છે. તે પુસ્તકમાં તેમણે જેને માટે નીચે મુજબ લખ્યું છે:

• The Jain set, numbring about 1,200,000 people mostly in the South of India, is an offshoot from Hinduisin; originally like Buddhism it represented a revolt against doctrinaire Hindu theology; the jains reject the Veda scriptures and do not accept caste. They do, however, belive in Karma, and Jains carry to an extreme point Hindu vegetarianism and veneration of animals. Orthodox Jains may not eat before sunrise or after sunset, for fear of swallowing an insect in the dark; they wear white gauze strips over their mouths during the day as a similar precaution. Most Jains carry a small brush, with which to dust place when they sit down, so that they may not inadvertently squash an ant or other insect. If a Jain should chance to kill an animal, even a tiny bug of some sort, he would turn into that bug for several hundred generations. Jains are a prosperous community, despite these strange strictuers; they are trulers, jewel juereliants, and the like''

“જૈન નતિ એ હિંદુધર્મની એક ઉપરાાખા છે, તેની વસ્તી લગભગ ખારલાખ માણસની છે અને માટે ભાગે તે દક્ષિણ હિંદમાં વસે છે. રારૂઆતમાં તેણે (જૈનધર્મ'), બુદ્ધ ધર્મની જેમ, હિન્દુ ધર્મ સામે મળવા પેકાયા હતા. જૈન વેદધર્મશાસ્ત્રોને માનતા નથી તેમજ તાતાતને સ્વીકારતા નથી, તે હિન્દુધર્મના શાકાહારીપણાનું તેમજ પ્રાણીમાત્ર પ્રત્યે સમભાવ રાખવાના સિદ્ધાંતનુ બહુ ચુસ્તપણે પાલન કરે છે. અંધારામાં ખાવાથી નાનાં નાનાં જંતુએ પેટમાં ચાલ્યા જાય એ ભયથી ધર્માંચુસ્ત જેના સ્પેચ પહેલાં અને સૂર્યાસ્ત પછી ભાજન કરતા નથી. આવી જ સાવચેતીરૂપે તેઆ દિવસ દરમ્યાન માટે સફેદ કપડાની પટ્ટી (મુહુપત્તિ) ખાંધે છે. પ્રમાદથી કીડી કે ખાને કાઈ તંતુ ચંપાઈ ન નય તે માટે જે જગ્યાએ બેસવુ હાચ તે જગ્યા પૂજવા માટે ઘણાખરા ને પાતાની સાથે નાની પૂણી (ચરવળે) રાખે છે. ભાગદ્વેગ જે કોઈ જૈન કાઈ પ્રાણી અથવા માટ જેવા નાના નાશ કરે તેા તેને સેકડા જન્મ સુધી તેવા અવતાર લેવા પડે છે એમ માને છે).

આ બધી વિચિત્ર ટીકાઓ છતાં, નકામ એક પ્રગતિશીલ કામ છે. તેમાં વેપારીઓ, ઝવેરીએ અને એવા ખીજા ધંધાદારીઓ છે.
નોંધ-જૈનધર્મોના અભ્યાસી કાઇ પણ વિદ્વાનને લાગ્યા વગર નહી' રહે કે જેને કે જૈનધર્માંની ઉપર લખી તે ઓળખાણ સાચી નથી, એમાં ઘણી ભૂલે છે. અમે એ પુસ્તકના વિદ્વાન લેખક, તેમજ પ્રકાશક સાથે પત્રવ્યવહાર કરી આ માટે ઘટતુ કરીશુ.
