________________ JANUARY, 1993 115 järtsao jar nämā jaha ya kato järisaphalam deřtil je vi ya karerti påvā pānavahaṁ taṁ ņisāmeha||3|| Then follows in prose, first an explanation of the påņivaha; then 30 of its synonyms (nämaņi imāņi gonnāņi); then the subject itself is treated of, at the conclusion of which the entire doctrine is referred immediately to Näyakulanamdana (Jñāta);389 evam āharsu Nāyakulanamdano mahappā Jinou Viravaranāmadhejjo, kahesi ya pāņivahassa phalavivāgaṁ; eso so pānivadho caído. (as in the introduction) vemaņaso. The next four sections are similarly arranged, except that after the vocative Jambu the treatment of the aliyavayanaṁ, adinnādāņam, abambhaṁ, pariggaha, begins without the interposition of gåthā strophies. The synonyms are invariably 30 in number and the conclusion is the same. In the case of the five sarvaradārāiń, two gäthas are found in the introduction of the first (ahimśa) after Jamba 1.390 itto samyaradāră-i paṁca vucchāmi āņupuvvie | jaha bhaniyāņi Bhagayayā savvadukkhavimukkhanatthae||1|| padhamam hoi ahimsa, biiyar saccavayanaṁ ti pannattam/dattam aņuņņāya samvaro ya baṁbhaceraṁ pariggahattam||2||. 331] The further details in dāras 6-10 are similar to those in dāras 1-5. The enumeration of the synonyms, which are here called pajjavanāmāni,-60 in the case of ahiṁsā-is carried on in a style somewhat different, and the concluding formula is not the same :evaṁ Näyamuniņā bhagavayā pannaviyaṁ parūviyaṁ pasiddhar siddham siddhavarasāsaņam iņam aghaviyaṁ suvesiyaṁ pasațțhaṁ (padhamam) samvaradāraṁ samattam ti bemi. The last two concluding words form a bond of connection between the existing redaction of anga 10 and angas 1-4, to which these words belong. Furthermore, the appeal to the Nāya recalls anga 2. Perhaps we have to deal here with traces of ancient date ; but, on the other hand, if we consider how many considerations make for the opposite conclusion a conservative point 389 See above, p. 261, on anga 2, 1, 27. 390 There are five gathas more inserted between däras 5 and 6.
