________________ New Orleans, LA Jain Art Exhibition In New Orleans July 14 to September 17, 1995 We invited our guests to join with us in aarti and welcomed them to browse through the exhibit of books on Jainism in English. Members of the society tried to answer their questions. We discussed how we could initiate a joint project that could benefit our two communities. Our guests thanked us by making a donation to the Society Here are some important dates for your calender. The Society will celebrate Paryushan Mahaparva from August 23 - 30, 1995. Samvatsari Pratikraman on August 30, 1995. Panditji Dhirubhai Mehta will enlighten us on many subjects from Kalpasutra, Tattvarthsutra and other scriptural topics. Dashlakshana Parva from August 30 to September 8, 1995, Dhoop Dashmi on September 4, 1995 and Anant Chaudash on September 8, 1995. For more information please call: 9057827-7494. The Executive Committee of the Jain Society of Toronto elected G. C. Jain and S. S. Khamesra to be JAINA Directors for the 1995 to 1997 term. The Committee thanked the outgoing directors Ramesh C. Jain and Praful Shah for their services. The New Orleans Museum of Art, Jain Society of South Louisiana, and the entire Indian Community of New Orleans invite you and your entire family to visit New Orleans during the Jain Art Exhibition to be held in New Orleans this summer. This exhibit will consist of over 150 aesthetically and historically significant pieces of sculpture and art from the past two thousand years and is one of the first of its kind ever held in North America. In addition to the Art exhibition, there will be: Jain Art Symposium which will be attended by world renowned Jain art scholars; weekend cultural programs, lectures, videos on non-violence, yoga and meditation workshops; training sessions on yoga, meditation and relaxation; a focus on non-violence (Ahimsa), with an Ahimsa Festival and a declaration of Ahimsa Week in the City of New Orleans. Field trips to the museum and summer art program for local school children and an Essay and Art contest for young people will be arranged. Art Exhibit events: July 23, 1995 - A lecture on Jain Art by Dr. Janice Leoshko, Professor of Art History at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. September 1-4, 1995 - Discourses, yoga and preksha meditation presented by Samanijis Shree Madhur and Charitra Prajnaji. The Samanijis are very well trained in Jain philosophy, yoga and meditation techniques. September 7, 1995 - A Bharatnatyam Recital by Janak Khendry and his associate. Mr. Khendry is a renowned classical dancer from Toronto who has appeared throughout India and North America on stage and television. September 8 - 9, 1995 - A Jain Art Symposium which will gather together world renowned scholars of Jainism and Jain art, for the first time. September 9 - 10,1995 - Lectures and meditation by Gurudev Shree Chitrabhanuji, a renowned Jain leader and the founder of the Jain Meditation International Center, New York City. SOUTHEAST REGION Surendra Shah, Regional Editor Atlanta, GA The Jain Society of Greater Atlanta celebrated Mahvir Jayanti on April 9, 1995 in Roswell, GA. This year's gathering was the largest ever with 350 people attending. The program was presented by the youth section of the Society. Pandit Shikharchand Jain from Ahmedabad, India visited in May and gave a scholarly discourse on Bhaktamar Sutra. Shantilal Muttha of Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana, India visited in April and gave a video presentation on the social and educational activities of his organization, which is currently providing aid to the young victims of the recent earthquake in Maharashtra. Recently the Jain Youth Society of Greater Atlanta hosted the 1st Southeast Regional Jain Youth Conference, "A Leap Accommodations Hotel and motel accommodations at reduced rates will be available to all visitors who wish to attend the Jain Art Exhibition.
