Pope John Paul II Rome, Italy - His Holiness Pope John Paul II welcomed a delegation of Jains in a private audience on February 15, 1995. The members of the delegation were participants in an Interfaith Dialogue that was organized by the Institute of Jainology, an international body of Jains in England. The delegation met with the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue on February 14. 1995 where it was agreed upon that: 1. It is appropriate that a dialogue be fostered between Jains and Catholics and that the meeting had been a useful contribution to the strengthening of that dialogue. 2. Jains are encouraged to enter into contact with Catholic authorities in the countries where they reside. This is particularly important in India. 3. It was recognized that there is no central authority in the Jain community. Nevertheless the Institute of Jainology in London, England can play the role of coordinator. 4. The Council agreed with the Institute that the dialogue could involve the following: • an exchange of publications • periodic exchange visits • information exchanged on the progress of the dialogue in the different areas, such as joint meetings on topics relevant to both parties.
