For the past decade or so, various Jain communities in India and in north America have brought out Jain directories, and in USA, Jain Center of Greater Boston in Massachussets pioneered in publishing Jain Directory of North America in 1971, championed by Dr Vinay Kumar Jain. It is a tradition among Jains since decades and decades to compilestatistical data for a demographic survey presentation. And Jain historical records show that one unique individual, Sheth Manickchand, a well known diamond merchant and widely respected philanthrophist, is the Father of Jain Directories. This first of its kind Jain Directory was published in the year 1914 by Sheth Manickchand at a cost of Rs.15,000. Ever since, the trend to publish Jain Directories has profusely progressed with improved statisticcal and analytical data. The collectiveness of the various Jain communities as a single family stands strengthened in the process begun by Sheth Manickchand.
